Six Ways to Build a Productive Day

Believe it or not, it takes just as much work to have a productive day as it does to have an unproductive one.

The difference lies in being able to take charge of your day, instead of having your day take charge of you.

Here are six ways to make tomorrow more productive than today:

Begin Your Day with the Right Mindset

There are two times of the day when you have absolute control of what you'll be doing: the first thing in the morning and the last thing at night. Don't, I repeat, don't start your day listening to, watching, or reading the news. The media is not interested in helping you get your day off to a positive start - quite the opposite.

Don't start your day on a negative note. In fact, don't end it that way either. Instead, start developing a library of books or CDs you can use to fill your mind with healthy, productive thoughts - instead of who released the most recent attack ad.

Begin Your Workday with a Purpose

Instead of heading off to work wishing you didn't have to, why not head to the office focused on how you can do something special, and contribute to the success of your company? After all, that's why the folks you work for hired you. They believed, and you probably worked hard to convince them, you were the right person for the job.

Well, if that's the case - and it probably is - make your eight hours count for something. Today is your opportunity to accomplish great things. Yesterday is history and you have no guarantee that tomorrow will come. Make today count!

Use Your Commute Wisely

Back to the idea that you have more control over your time that you might give yourself credit for, a 30-minute drive to and from work gives you the opportunity to get five more hours of positive and productive information into your brain - every week. That's almost one full workday of new learning you can use to contribute to your personal or professional development.

Do you think your competition is doing that? I don't. That's why I say it's easy to get to the top of your profession - by doing what unsuccessful folks aren't doing. You're creating the future you want because you're controlling the clock - not letting the clock control you, and you're controlling what you're thinking about.

Utilize 80/20 Time Management

Look, everyone has a lot to do. We're all busy, but don't fall into the trap of believing that being busy and being productive are the same thing. Here's the reality: 80 percent of your productivity comes from 20 percent of your activity. So, use the 80/20 rule as a time management tool. Twenty percent of an eight-hour day is 90 minutes.

My suggestion is to use those precious 90 minutes wisely. Set a 45-minute appointment with yourself in the morning, and another in the afternoon, to work only on your most important projects. Respect those two appointments as much as you would if they were appointments with your best customer or an important person in your company or industry.

The key to productivity is focus, and the best way to focus on those most important projects is to schedule time for your personal and professional success.

Be a Positive Influence - On Everyone

Do you like being around negative, sullen people? I didn't think so. Talk about an energy drain. Here's a formula that will help you stay positive throughout the day, it's E+R=O. That stands for Event + Response = Outcome.

The difference between a creative, positive outcome to (any) event - isn't the event itself - it's your RESPONSE to the event that will determine the outcome. You have no control over the attitudes and actions of others, but you do have control over yours. When you're negatively impacted by the foolish actions of someone else, control the controllable - your response. Make it a smart and responsible one. The next time you hear about a road rage incident on the evening news - think about E+R=O.

Bookend Your Day

As I said earlier, the first thing in the morning and the last few minutes before you hit the sack should be "controllable time." Start and end your day by controlling what goes into your mind. When you begin your day with positive and encouraging reading or listening material, you start the process of taking charge of your day.

When you close the day the same way, you set yourself up for a great night's rest. Another way to use those last few moments is to review the events of the day you've just experienced. Congratulate yourself for the accomplishments of the day but, more importantly, learn from those things that didn't turn out so well - and don't do them again.

Two of the keys to success and achievement are focus and discipline. Focus on those few things that matter most and then discipline yourself to control as much of your day as possible. Controlling your day means controlling your calendar.

Most of us have repeatedly been instructed that it is necessary to have an essential dream, a personal vision, and create important and relevant goals, if we wish to be successful and to achieve.

However, simply having goals is not enough, but rather it is necessary to have a mechanism in place to transform goals into reality, by taking action.

Many studies indicate that the vast majority of individuals perform and achieve better when there is a visual aspect to their learning, commitment, habit and behavior.

It is for this reason that most great achievers have dreams that they visualize and which motivate them, create goals and an action plan, and don't simply think about or try to memorize what they wish to do and how, but rather, put these goals down in writing and refer to them often and repeatedly.

Brian Tracy stated, "Committing your goals to paper increases the likelihood of achieving them one- thousand percent."

1. Even the most important and far-reaching dream fails to yield results unless it motivates the dreamer to commit to specific goals, which he then designs an action plan to achieve. In order to optimize one's results, write the goals down, first in broad thoughts, and then in specifics. Explain in writing your reasons for why these goals are so important. Then put them in a priority order. Then put them down with a time table or timeline for when certain actions need to be taken, and why.

Create this action plan in such a way that you think your ideas through thoroughly, and you decide upon a first or preferred course of action, as well as numerous alternative or contingency approaches to achieving your most essential goals. Commit to these thoroughly and review these notes and ideas on a very regular basis. This will both motivate and refresh you on your personal journey.

2. Never forget that you must believe in yourself in order to achieve these goals. In the majority of cases, a most effective tool is the use of affirmations. Affirmations must be personal positive statements regarding matters that are most important to you personally. They must always be stated in both the positive/ affirmative as well as in the present tense.

For example, if you feel you need to become a better speaker to achieve your goals, an affirmation might be, "I am an enthusiastic, stimulating speaker that audiences enjoy listening to." Note that the statement is specific, positive and in the present tense. Try this with items that you feel you would like to personally pay more attention to, or get better at.

Most of us find visual learning the most effective. Some use this method in conjunction with others, while many find it to be their preferred methodology. Write down what you want to achieve and what you need to do.

Leaders Go Above and Beyond - Go the Extra Mile!

Have you ever been in a situation where you saw a leader take a specific action, yet you had no idea "why" or "how" the leader decided to take that specific action? Well, I have too!

That's why I decided to study various leaders that I have worked with over 22 years and before long, I started to get insights into why leaders do what they do.

More importantly, I started to understand that what a leader does is much deeper than the specific action he takes.

The action is normally tied to an outcome or result that she wants to accomplish, yet it may not make sense when viewing it from a "present" moment perspective.

This is why most people are standing around scratching their heads, watching leaders execute, yet they do not understand "why" the leader is doing what she is doing.

I wanted to understand "why," so this article is the 2nd of over 100 leadership insights that I have experienced in my career and that I intend to share with other leaders. This article focuses on leaders going above and beyond ... going the extra mile.

Leaders understand the need to give something extra, above and beyond what's expected. Success for a leader resides on the other side of what's expected. If a leader is satisfied with what's expected in results or performance, he can never expect to lead his people past average results.

Your people will use you as a barometer to determine how much they are willing to give. If you give average efforts, your people will feel justified in giving average efforts as well. However, if you give above-average efforts, your people will notice and before long, you will see that they are giving more than expected as well.

Call it competitiveness, human nature or whatever - people will perform commensurate to what they perceive others are doing - especially the leader!

The key is to identify what the expectation is ... and then figure out how to exceed it. You will be surprised at the results! You will marvel at how, by stepping your game up, your people will slowly, but surely start to step their games up as well ... and exceed expectations.

Napoleon Hill, of Think and Grow Rich fame, stated that, "... there are no traffic jams on the extra mile." The extra mile ... the road less travelled and the road that leader's must get on and stay on.

Powerfully LETTING GO of Resistance to Change!

Resistance can be a lot of things ... but basically it is your resistance to or fear of making certain changes in your life.

Dealing with this resistance and these fears help you to cement your changes and make them stronger.

You could be making changes, everything is going smoothly, and then it comes up ... all these emotions trying to stop you. Like certain fears, insecurities, excuses and especially doubt about the process and it makes you want to stop.

BUT ...

These times are among the most transformational, because resistance in fact proves it is working, if you just stayed totally where you were and weren't working on letting go of what is holding you back in your subconscious, nothing would be stirred up because you would be doing nothing!

So when you are making changes, letting go of a lot of stuff, some discomfort is natural and realize that on the other side of this is something much better ... consistently for me at my times of the most resistance coming up, when I get through it ... I find these my most powerful breakthroughs.

So we now know resistance is a sign of something positive shifting, but how to we deal with it?

Basically we use everything that is coming up as a way to strengthen our resolve and the changes we are making. Because the more stuff that is coming up, the more we have to work on ... the more we have to let go of.. and the more healing we will have in the end.

The powerful tool I use to deal with this is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) or tapping. To learn the basics, I have a basic introduction on my website.

Now what you want to do is think of a change you want to make. I will use a recent success of mine as an example. I wanted to change my sleeping times from getting up at 3pm due to habit after working a night job, to 8am, which I have successfully achieved now!

Focus on that change/habit/whatever and notice the emotions in your body, fears, thoughts, doubts, any past memories around it. And I want you to tap on everything that comes up ... until you get it down to zero. When you have it to zero. Then it's time to tap in the positive.

So for my example, getting up at 8am. I visualized myself getting out of bed, and big red text saying "8:00am" in the picture and I brought in positive feelings, feelings of passion, excitement, looking forward to the day, feeling good and I started tapping while imagining this, making the feelings stronger ... and tapped in affirmations "I want to get up at 8am everyday, I choose to get up at 8am every day, I allow myself to get up at 8am every day". And do this enough that it is strong and compelling for you.

I did this and the very next day I got up at 8am!

But then in the following days a lot of stuff come up trying to stop me from keeping this up. All kinds of fears such as it would effect relationships with my friends who I usually see at night, fear that I can't keep it up and several other things. And as more of that come up, I would spent time tapping on it and then putting back in the positive feeling and visualizing myself getting up at 8am.

And I've been doing it consistently. I don't need to set an alarm, my subconscious is programmed for this and I naturally wake up around this time.. allowing myself to wake up and giving myself this freedom to do it naturally is powerful too, if I set my alarm that would have made things harder due to so much negativity most of us have around alarms. And it feels better to just wake up naturally.

I may wake up at 7:50 or 8:10, it doesn't matter, I can lay there a few minutes and breathe, and I also lay in bed and tap/do EFT on the feelings coming up of "I don't want to do this" or whatever, I then look out the window into the light to wake up more and get up comfortably.

Visualization and affirmations are a powerful technique, and combined with EFT are even more powerful, you will start to naturally go towards these things as you clear out and let go of the negativity first and then put the positive stuff in instead of just stacking it on top!

Give it a go, try it on a habit or a change you want to make ... and notice the difference in how much easier you are able to do it!

How to Use Goal Setting As the Perfect Tool For Your Success

In order to attain your highest potential, it is essential that you expand your mind and your ambition to dream big.

Goal setting has been used for centuries by successful and victorious individuals. Goal setting goes beyond dreams and imagination. "Goals are dreams with deadlines" (Diana Scharf Hunt).

The life of your dreams can come true if you put into practice the art and magic of goal-setting.

To begin, you must first make an assessment of your current life situation and the life you want to be living. For example:

Current

  1. No education/degree
  2. Single
  3. Lacking a spiritual balance
  4. Lonely

Where I want to be

  1. A fulfilling and rewarding career
  2. Part of a loving relationship
  3. Spiritually fulfilled
  4. Part of a loyal circle of friends

Next, it is important to decide on the steps necessary to attain those goals. At first, some, if not all of your goals may seem unreachable. However, you cannot let that intimidate you.

When people are intimidated or afraid, they are blinded of their potential. Fear is the number one obstacle that prevents many individuals from reaching happiness and satisfaction. You must see fear as a challenge to overcome something that attempts to stop you.

Once you confront fear and turn the situation around to your favor, you will feel a priceless sense of confidence, and fear will be defeated.

Take for example the first goal which is to obtain a college degree or a fulfilling and rewarding career. In order to obtain that, you must look at what steps are necessary to get there. The options include attending school, workshops or even networking and some research.

In today's modern world of technology attending school and receiving valuable training is easier than ever. The options include online learning, blended learning involving online classes and occasional classroom attendance, short one-day workshops, etc ... Each goal must have sub goals that include the path to take to reach the destination.

Example:

  • No education degree/career --------------------------------- A fulfilling and rewarding career

Sub goals

  • Enrolling in school
  • Attending workshops to gain the skills necessary to land my dream job
  • Networking
  • Researching companies that may provide the opportunity

As you can see, it is important to write down goals and to break them down into smaller goals that will help you get to the right place.

The method is Goals = sub-goals = results.

You must always dream big because no dream is too big to be accomplished, and no dream is unreachable. Do not be intimidated by barriers. Obstacles are only opportunities in disguise. When you really want something, nothing can stop you.

Where Is Your Mind? Five Suggestions for Coaching Your Mind for Success

Where is your mind?

Some people leave their brains at home when they leave the house for work. Their humdrum job does not require any thought, so they do not think - at all! They simply go about their duties like mindless automatons with no ambitions or goals.

Others bring their brain along, but let it run wild. Their minds spin around like crazy on non sequitur topics that have nothing to do with their goals or ambitions. Their brain is like a runaway car on a large parking lot, circling around and around, not getting anywhere, and potentially dangerous.

Your mind is like a child - it will run amok if left alone and it will die if not allowed to run. We must take charge of our mind and train it to be productive. Such training will be incremental. It is an elephant - you cannot eat it in one bite. Take it one bite at a time.

Here are some bite-sized things you can do to start.

  • Set positive, achievable goals - This point is first because without a destination in mind, cannot direct your thoughts. Your goals should be achievable - no whole elephants! They should, however, be challenging enough to require some planning and effort - in that order!

  • Be aware of your thoughts - Even the aforementioned "mindless automatons" cannot truly shut down thought processes. Success is an attitude, and the things you think of and how you think of them will dictate your attitude. Hence the axiom: Change the way you think of things, and things you think of will change. It is essential that you take charge of your thoughts. Become consciously aware of what you think about and shape those thoughts such that they lead you toward your goals.

  • Take charge of idle time - There are often times in a person's day that are less mentally taxing than others. Do not waste those times.

  • Spend idle moments wisely and focus your thoughts on positive things, and preferably things that move you toward your goals.

  • Make time to concentrate on your goals - Lest this article be mistaken for an excuse to daydream, let me make something clear: You probably have things to do that require your full attention. Some jobs allow more freedom to think than others, but even the most menial tasks at least require attention to detail.

  • Set aside time to consciously devote thought and planning to reach your goals.

  • Finally, take a daily inventory - What did you think of today? Were your thoughts focused? Did you consider your ambitions in a positive context? Keep a journal of your daily mental excursions and make note of your progress toward your goals.

Is Creativity a Requirement for Success?

I recently read an article about skills you to need to succeed at anything.

Intended for businesses, it talked about communication and listening, decision making, personal (time) management, analytical skills and creative thinking - to name just a few.

Okay, improving many of these skills will certainly make a difference and contribute to your success in business, and often in life.

But 'creative thinking' certainly got me thinking ...

When things go wrong or problems arise, how do you resolve them and what do you do? Ever had anyone tell you to get creative or think out of the box? And therein lies the problem.

By definition, creativity means you have the ability to create new or original ideas or methods. But most of us don't consider ourselves creative, unless we are a designer, artist, crafts person or yes, in advertising. So messages that promote 'creative thinking' often fall flat - and the recipient feels doomed before they start.

Here's a better approach. Think innovation. By definition, innovation is the introduction of new things or methods. Subtle difference - introducing new methods versus creating them.

Innovation doesn't require originality or uniqueness that is often associated with creativity. It's simply a matter of continuously looking for better ways to do what you do - and you can use what others have already perfected.

This change in mindset can be helpful to those small business owners who consider themselves more technical or analytical -- but definitely not creative!

The good news is we all have the ability to be innovative and we don't need to go at it alone. Make it part of your culture and get others involved too. It's important if you want to achieve sustainable success in business.

So where should you apply innovation in your business? The answer is simple - everywhere. From marketing and sales to customer support, delivery and team building, all areas of your business will benefit from a little innovative thinking ... and action!

  • A process for staying connected with customers that builds retention rates is innovative.
  • Finding new markets for your products or services is innovative.
  • A digital marketing campaign that consistently delivers quality leads is innovative.
  • Re-packaging products and services to improve margins and sales is innovative.
  • A system for consistently hiring quality people is innovative.

So don't get hung up on creativity, but do make innovation a definite priority. It will pay off on the bottom line and may actually make what you do a lot more fun!

The Power of Positive Motivation

I was driving home the other day and I was thinking about the evening ahead.

My plan was to go home, change into my gym clothes and get to my evening workout. I then became fixated on the word "workout".

The first part of that word is "work". We all know that it takes work to become better at something, to improve ourselves.

Nobody ever became better by lying on the couch with a bag of chips on their chest. Believe me, I've tried it a number of times and can speak from experience.

The word work can strangely enough have a negative meaning during the course of our lives. I know there are days when I wake up and tell my wife, "Man, I don't feel like going to work today." She then responds, "I'm not your man." But that is beside the point.

It's not so much that I don't want to do the work, I actually love my job. It's just the idea of going to work, going through the process of preparing when I want to choose to stay in bed. Don't get me wrong, the word work is not a bad word. Our country was built as a result of the hard work of those before us. But it seems to me that back then the word was more of a positive motivator.

Think about a marriage that is going through a rough patch. A common piece of advice is that a couple needs to "work on it". I don't know if that is the best way to phrase the advice. A loving relationship should not have to be work, but I get the meaning.

Whether it be our job, our bodies, or our relationships, we should always strive to do our best. It's much easier to achieve our goals when we are positively motivated and I think that the term "work" can sometimes be a de-motivator. I'm not saying we have to be perfect.

Sometimes we miss a deadline, skip a workout or say something before thinking of the negative ramifications. These can all happen even if we are positively motivated.

But if we can find that positive motivation and continue to use that in our day to day activities I believe we can minimize the physical and mental hurdles that prevent us from being the best we can be. We won't look at it so much as "work".

Confucius said, "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life". I love the quote and I completely agree with it. However, if I were to change anything about it I may change "job you love" with "positive motivator", because with positive motivation everything in life becomes easier.

My initial motivation to fitness was my wife Kelly. Her journey to fitness has inspired me and I am motivated to share her story with others. She also has motivated me to strive to be a better person, physically, mentally and spiritually. Motivation is a positive energy and as it feeds it gets bigger and stronger.

Case in point, about ten years ago my father found out he had prostate cancer. A few days after the surgery when I was visiting with him he began to talk about all the people who had come to visit him, who prayed for him, who sent him cards and flowers.

He then said to me, "I've really got a lot of friends." That simple statement has stuck with me these years because I believe that those around him gave him positive motivation to aid his recovery. He is now cancer free and healthy as ever.

Now take the opposite - there are many stories of couples who, when one of the spouses dies after a long time together, the other dies shortly thereafter. Why is that? It is said that the person "died of a broken heart" but the truth is that they have just lost the will to live, they no longer had the motivation to go on living without their spouse.

Being a motivator in someone's life is powerful. And I've found out firsthand that this is reciprocal. That evening I was driving home thinking about my upcoming workout I was tempted to skip it. I was tired and had a long day. But then I thought of all the people who had told me that this site and our journey has been a positive motivator for them.

This feedback motivates me even more to go to the gym, to be a positive influence, to affect positive change in people. The motivation I give to others is given back to me and it strengthens me, physically, mentally, and spiritually.

The next time you hear the word "work" and it comes with a negative meaning, find a positive motivation. I'm betting that the task at hand will seem less "work-like". And share that motivation with as many people as you can.

Like a boomerang, it will come back to you (I guess, I've never actually thrown a boomerang but for the sake of this article let's go with it). The more lives you effect in a positive way, the stronger the boomerang effect will be.

SMART goals were all the rage a few years ago in the corporate world.

For those of you not familiar with business jargon, you might ask: "What is a SMART goal?"

SMART goals have to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timed.

This approach is a great start to effective goal-setting, but it can be made better by adding Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) techniques.

The sensory-specific information you include (e.g., what you see, what you hear, what you feel), can help you make your goals even more specific, more meaningful to you, and assist you in modifying your behavior in order to achieve your goals.

If you want SMART goals that are even smarter, you need to work out what you want by using a well-informed outcome process. The first step is to pick an area of your life for which you want to set a goal.

  • Family
  • Relationship
  • Career
  • Health
  • Spirituality

Remember, keep it simple, specific and realistic. Applying NLP techniques requires that you use all your senses to design a SMART goal. You will need to answer a series of questions which will allow you to understand your true motivations for wanting to achieve your goals and so that you can weigh the pros and cons of success versus failure.

7 Steps for Creating NLP SMART Goals

Is the goal stated in the positive?

You must know clearly what your desired outcome is because you will need to maintain focus on that direction in order to achieve it. If you choose a vague goal like "I want to be healthier" or "I want to be richer" these goals will be too easy to be satisfied.

If you go for a walk then you are healthier than if you didn't and so your subconscious could be that the goal has been accomplished. Or if you find a $10 note then you are wealthier. However you are unlikely to be totally satisfied with either of these outcomes.

Instead you need to be more specific such as "I want to have $100,000 by August 1st 2013" This is a measurable goal written in the positive form.The problem with putting goals in the negative form can be disempowering.

And remember your subconscious mind reads all statements that you feed it as being positive. So if you state "I don't want to be fat" your subconscious mind hears "I want to be fat".

Is the goal self-initiated, maintained and within my control?

If you want to achieve your outcome then it has to come from you. This means, is the goal something that you want to achieve? A student might feel that her parents want her to enter law school. But when she comes to sit for the entrance exam she fails miserably.

The reason can be found in the fact that it wasn't ever her goal to enter law school. Also is the goal in your control? A goal like "I want to be a millionaire" is not a bad goal but a better one might be a more specific goal that you can definitely control. For example work out how many sales calls you would have to make in order for you to achieve that specific financial goal.

Ask these questions:
- Am I doing it for myself or someone else?
- Does the outcome rely solely on me or will I need to work with someone else to achieve it? If the answer is the latter, go back to the main question: Is the goal within my control?
- Does the goal describe the evidence procedure? The Evidence Procedure is another way of asking: "When do I know that I've achieved my goal?

The following questions can help you find out if your goals are too vague, or if your desired outcome is clearly stated.

  • How do I know that I'm getting the desired outcome?
  • What sill I be doing when I get it?
  • What will I see, hear, and feel when I have it?

Is the context of the goal clearly defined?

Clearly identify where, when, why, how, and with whom you want to achieve your goal? This question will help you fine-tune what you want by eliminating what you don't want. Sound backward? It's not really.

Sometimes we get so bogged down in what we don't want that we have a hard time articulating what we do want. By defining when you want something, you may in the process identify steps that need to be taken before you can have it.

Does the goal identify the necessary resources?

Resources are the people, knowledge, and tools you need to help you accomplish a particular task. The following questions will help you identify what you need, to achieve your outcome. A good resource may even be past experiences that will help you identify the resources you need for this new undertaking.

  • What resources do I have now?
  • What resources to I need to acquire?

Is the goal ecological?

A goal being ecological means that the outcome fits in with all aspects of your life. If the outcome conflicts with another outcome or belief that you hold, you will find it hard to achieve?

Does the goal identify the first step you need to take?

In addition to your self-identified steps, keep these in mind as well as they will help you along your path.

Take action

Nothing happens without this step. Once you take the first step, the others will follow.

Develop sensory awareness

If you have the awareness to see, hear and feel what isn't working, you will more easily be able to modify your behavior toward your desired behavior (NOTE: Don't underestimate the power of this step!).

Maintain behavioral flexibility

One of the presuppositions of NLP is referred to as The Law of Requisite Variety. This presupposition has to do with flexibility. The person with the most flexibility will control the environment. The Law of Requisite Variety originates in the field of cybernetics, control, and systems theory. More simply put, it means a flexible system with many options is better able to cope with change.

In our complex society, we all know change happens all the time, and it can happen rapidly. So those individuals, who are more flexible in their approach to life, will adapt better and experience less stress. The theory can also be applied to the business world. A company that is too rigid faces potential danger if its market changes or even disappears.

Remember that a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Change often comes not through a huge breakthrough but through cumulative action.

Should I Teach My Young Children to Set Goals?

It has been said that setting goals is the roadmap to success.

Learning how to set goals and work to achieve them is a life skill that will bring fortune.

Unfortunately life skills are not really taught much at traditional schools.

So when should we begin teaching our children how to set short and long term goals for themselves?

That really depends on your child, but it is never too early to start teaching your children these vital life skills.

When children are around kindergarten age we may explain life goals, short term and long term, to them and help our child set some goals for himself.

Setting goals will help children learn that they will receive some kind of reward such as getting straight A's, earning a little money, or learning something new. They will begin to see how life rewards us for our efforts.

The first step is to discuss short and long term goals with your child in a way in which they will understand. Younger children may have a hard time concentrating on long term goals. Sit down with your child and help him or her think of some things they may wish to accomplish in the next 6 to 8 weeks.

After helping your child make a short term goals list, you can then show your child how accomplishing short term goals can lead to the accomplishment of long term goals as well. Help them make two lists, one for short term goals and one for long term goals. Remember to do the short term goals first. This will also help your child think of long term goals they may wish to add to their list.

Something else valuable children will learn from goal setting is that not every goal can be accomplished. Learning how to react when we fail at something is a life skill we all need. This is the perfect time to teach your child to pick him or self up and start on another goal.

It is also important for you to help your child set goals that are somewhat obtainable. For instance, a child getting D's in school is not going to able to accomplish a goal of getting all A's on his or her next report card. This would be something to add to your child's list of long term goals.

Tips

  • It is crucial to write your goals down.
  • Be very specific in what it is you want to accomplish.
  • Give each goal a reasonable amount of time.
  • Help your child set realistic goals for themselves.
  • Check your child's progress toward the goals they have set.
  • Talk to your children about your goals for them and your family.
  • Remember your child's goals may change as they get older.

Helping your child set academic goals will ultimately lead to them to do better in school. Setting goals with your child will give you a chance to bring up things such as the importance of education, personal growth, money management, and your child's health.

Depending on the child's age, things such as brushing your teeth twice a day, saving $50, making better grades, and learning a new skill are great things that may be added as goals.

How to Boost Creativity at Work

When it comes to understanding how to boost creativity at the office, many people are at a loss. A drab corporate environment isn't going to help inspire innovation.

But these days, creativity is becoming a sought-after skill in the working world. Creativity is no longer a trait reserved for people in "artsy" professions; creative thinkers have unsurpassable problem solving skills and are an asset in every line of work.

A creative work environment can help you to feel more creative on a day-to-day basis. It can help you to break out of regular patterns and take new routes to solving problems. Unconventional solutions will come naturally when you work in a creative environment.

The following tips are just some suggestions on how to boost creativity in your workplace.

1. Incorporate visuals into your work. Try incorporating graphics into your next presentation, or using a whiteboard to illustrate a sequence or flow of events. You will find that forcing your brain to think in a visual manner is helpful.

2. Change up your routine. Try doing things opposite to what you normally would. Have a weekly meeting at the beginning of the day instead of at the end. Present from the back of the room. Start with your conclusion and work backwards in a report.

3. Take breaks. Make your breaks constructive to creative thought. Spend some time doodling, reading a joke book, or doing a mental puzzle. You'll find that the distraction will help you to get back to your work with a clear mind.

4. Stop checking the clock. You'll be surprised how much your sense of time affects what you think you can accomplish in a day. Try taking off your watch and going by your internal clock for a while. You'll notice a big difference in your productivity and efficiency.

5. Listen to music. Try listening to the radio at work. If you find talking on the radio distracts you too much, try a podcast of ambient or instrumental music. Music can help you to feel calm and relaxed, and it can also lead your brain to new ways of thinking.

6. Do something else. A lot of companies have now started promoting flexi-hours in the workplace, a.k.a. work time that can be used for other purposes. Employees are encouraged to spend time reading a book or taking a class, in order to sharpen their skills and make sure their brains are being challenged.

7. Work together. Ask Jim from accounting what he thinks about your management strategy. Or talk to your receptionist about the new company logo. You'll be surprised to find that people outside of a particular department might have valuable comments when it comes to company matters.

Learning how to boost creativity in the office is simple, and it can really help to maximize your potential. Whether you are looking to enhance your own abilities or you're looking out for your employees, changing your office environment is the first place to start.

5 Tried and True Methods to Stay Focused

Got your goals set and your motivation and systems in place? Great! Now let's look at five ways to stay focused on keeping focused, especially on long-term goals.

Focus is a problem even for the most experienced goal-setter. In fact, getting distracted is one of the biggest problems in goal achievement. Try these five methods to keep focused and your eye on the prize:

Commit

This may sound a bit silly since you've already been through the goal-setting stage. Shouldn't that mean you're already committed? But, some people who are really good at setting goals and getting started, forget that they actually have to show up until the goal is reached.

That's why I recommend having you think through your "why" and restate your commitment to doing what it takes to "get 'er done."

Think of standing at the altar with your beloved and going through the marriage ceremony, including the "'til death do us part" section. You may be in love with that person and want to create a fabulous future together, but until you make that official commitment, your dedication may be temporary. Commit to your goal the way you'd commit to a partner.

Slow down

If you're a natural go-getter, doing a lot of "stuff" but you may not necessarily be doing the RIGHT stuff. As a result, you waste energy on tasks that aren't directly contributing to your ultimate goal, and start new "projects" in the process.

Often I am approached by new entrepreneurs who excitedly rattle off a list of ten new projects and ask me if they are good ideas. The answer is "yes" ten times; "but now pick one and stick to it until it's done."

In other words - Slow Down! Before you take on any additional projects consider how it's going to affect your ability to devote needed resources towards your current goals. Before you start anything else, would you be better off sticking with the pile of goals that are already partly completed?

Take a deep breath and try to be a little more Zen. Your slow and steady pace will pay off when you save yourself from burn-out.

Don't expect immediate payoff

As I mentioned above, some of you may be blessed with "entrepreneurial ADD." You try something, it works for a little bit, and then it gets kind of boring, or the original results start to diminish. That's when you switch and try something else. You repeat the process until you have a shelf full of diet books or a computer hard drive full of half-finished projects. Stop!

Success comes not from the first five sit-ups you do in your workout today, but from the last five sit-ups you squeak out at the end of your workout. You know, the ones you do when you think you're too tired to do any more.

Likewise, success comes from the last five emails you force yourself to send, or the last five cold calls you make after everyone else has gone home for the day. Aim to push yourself to the edge - and then go a little further. Results take time.

Set aside some time each day

If you tend to be a "starter" rather than a "finisher," you may need more structure to your time. One technique for staying the course is to set aside a specific block of time each day to focus on your goals - AND ONLY your goals. That means no checking email, no combing the dog, and no phone calls.

Time set aside for your goals could be as little as fifteen minutes or as long as an hour. What matters is making this time a habit; this is the time you "punch in" each and every day to work on your long-term projects. This discipline will move you forward, bit by bit, if you are consistent.

Reward yourself for focus, not just for accomplishments

While it's great to have rewards in place for when you achieve your goals, it's important for those of us who tend to lose focus to reward ourselves for the effort and focus, not just accomplishing our goals.

Rewards for focusing on our goals could be as simple as allowing yourself to check email, or, going for coffee with a friend.

It really works! I know because I use this technique all the time. In fact, I'm going to go relax and watch "Grey's Anatomy" right after I finish this section. Good job, me!

Want to Stop Procrastinating? Follow These 6 Tips

Everyone procrastinates from time to time.

Whether it's that term paper you don't feel like writing or major decision you're afraid to make, it always feels like there's something else you want to be doing instead.

Why do you feel this way?

Procrastination is actually your brain's way of avoiding scary and unpleasant emotions - like depression, anxiety, and stress.

For example, if you delay writing the paper, you can delay worrying about the grade you're going to get on it.

Unfortunately, though, this is only a temporary fix. When you realize you're behind, you're going to feel even more stressed than if you had just written it in the beginning!

So, how do you stop procrastinating once and for all?

1. Get organized

Make a to-do list that includes both big and small things. That way, when you complete tasks, you'll get to experience the joy of crossing things off the list. And, the smaller your to-do list gets, the more you'll look forward to getting everything done!

2. Start with the most important task

You may not like the most important item on the list, but you need to start with it nonetheless. Once you're finished with it, you'll feel much better. In some cases, this can actually save you some money. For example, you might hate to pay the credit card bill, but it needs to be done - and the sooner you do it, the less you'll pay in interest and late fees.

3. Take one step at a time

Anytime you can divide your work into smaller, more manageable pieces, do it. That way, you'll rarely have to deal with something that's completely overwhelming.

4. Stay organized

If you really want to stop procrastinating, you'll need a calendar so you can write down all of your important dates, appointments, and deadlines - for both your short-term and long-term goals. Make sure you have the calendar nearby all the time, so you don't have to deal with any surprises later! Be sure not to overbook yourself, because that's a surefire way to get more stressed out. And the more stressed out you are, the more likely you are to procrastinate.

5. Work out a schedule

Once you've got a routine, it'll be easier to accomplish things. Also, be sure to reward yourself for sticking to your schedule. That way, you're more likely to stick with it!

6. Be realistic

No matter how organized and motivated you are, you're still human. You're not going to be perfect at everything all of the time. Also, be realistic about delegating. Just because you're the boss doesn't mean you can't pass off work to your other employees. If you always think you have to do everything yourself, you're always going to feel completely overwhelmed.

How to Achieve Personal Development Goals

All humans, in order to not only survive, but thrive in their environments, need to grow in ways that contribute to their personal development.

In order to grow properly, a set of goals need to be laid out in order to encourage the right sorts of personal growth.

In general, having a set of seven or so goals that need to be achieved can work wonders when it comes to developing not only personally but also professionally.

The first step to take in any sort of development plan is to compile a personal list of 'wishes.'

It really doesn't matter what those wishes are and they can be as whimsical or as grounded in reality as is desired. Once the personal development list is compiled put it away for a day or two.

Afterward, and as part of the second step, take out the list and then begin prioritizing those goals or wishes, ranking them from most important to least important.

Thirdly, look at all the goals listed and begin dividing them into the ones that can be achieved in the least amount of time, the ones that may take a medium-length amount of time and, finally, those goals that could take a longer amount of time to achieve. Remember: All such goals are steps that need to be taken on the road to ultimate personal development.

The fourth step on the path to development is to be absolutely realistic about ranking goals along a time continuum and what it would take to achieve them. For instance, if a college degree is the goal, and many classes will need to be taken before receiving that degree, don't rank it as a short-term or even medium-term goal because it's most likely a long-term objective, with several steps within that goal that will need to be taken first.

Additionally, it's always smart to engage in self-awareness, which is the fifth step along the path to creating an environment where it becomes easy to develop in a personal manner. Always take care to look within when considering whether the goals laid out can be achieved. Plus, be brutally honest because without being self-aware about one's own faults when it comes to achievement of any goal there can never be any real progress.

The last two steps to take on the way toward fulfilling any developmental goal have to do with risk taking and journal keeping. In the former, taking a risk is a part of any great achievement, and stepping outside one's comfort zone is a necessary activity in any great endeavor.

If the goal of finishing college seems completely scary, then practice self-pep talks, meditation or visualization, for example. And never fail to note progress or lack of same in a journal, say, even if only to use it to deliver a well-timed motivation boost.

Take these seven steps towards personal development and watch the positive results pour in!

The "Yeah But's"

Being vulnerable is one of the toughest parts of the human experience. Whether its ridicule or physical harm that we risk, it is never easy.

But what are our options if we never want to be in that position? We never take risks. We protect ourselves from all harm, thereby protecting ourselves from life.

In other words, we live a very sterile, risk free life. And then we wonder why its no fun.

Exposing the real me has always been difficult for me to do, especially since I suffer from the "yeah buts."

Whenever I try to tell myself that I'm doing OK my devious mind counters with a negative.

For example, if I try to feel good about my being a single mother and a homeowner, my mind will say "Yeah, but what about that $1500.00 credit card balance you owe?" Or if I've spent the morning cleaning the house and want to feel the satisfaction of a job well done, I'll hear " Yeah but what about the cob webs down in the cellar?"

This voice makes it hard to risk opening myself up and putting my cob webs on display, but whenever I can rise above that voice I'm always delighted by the response.

The higher the risk the higher the payoff. We all have secrets about ourselves that we prefer the world not know, but it is in exposing ourselves that we heal. Magic happens in our willingness to become vulnerable. By doing so, you unlock the door for others to expose their weaknesses and insecurities or mistakes.

We all have them. But we motor through life putting so much effort into pretending we don't that we fail to realize that others are pretending also. I have spent much of my life pretending I've got it all going on that I'm really good at it. But there's no joy in pretending for me. If anything, I feel like a doll with a smile painted on her face.

Joy has found its way to me only through making myself vulnerable,by risking defeat or mistakes or ridicule. Standing up for what I believe in, even when it far removed from what the "mainstream" think.

Are you scared? Say so! Feeling like your undeserving? Say the words out loud- so you can see how little sense it makes! Have a secret dream to parachute out of a plane? Tell someone!

The world needs you to be real as much as you do, for we 'great pretenders' need your reminder of what we really want. We all forget from time to time which is why the ones who "get it" need to share with those of us who've forgotten. We take turns at remembering and forgetting so today's teachers will be tomorrow's students.
