The Metal-Eating Man

The annals of medical science contain many cases of people who have tried to devour metal objects. Usually they injure themselves and sometimes they die.

Yet there is one man who has devoted his adult life to metal-eating on a grand scale and seems none the worse for wear. His name: Michel Lotito, a Frenchman from Grenoble, who stage name of Monsieur Mangetout means "Mr. Eat-All."

Lotito has given "eating performances" all over the world. In recent appearances he has chewed his way through shopping trolleys, television sets, aluminum skis, and several bicycles ("the chain is the tastiest part", he is reported to have said). Apart from these substantial objects he has consumed hundreds of razor blades, plates, coins, glasses and bottles, cutlery, beer cans, bullets, nuts and bolts, knitting needles, lengths of chain, and phonograph records.

His major achievement to date: a Cessna 150 light aircraft. He started munching it in June 1978, and at a rate of a few snacks a day, finished it in 1980.

Lotito's remarkable eating habits began when he was a child. Mocked by other children because he had rickets, he came to win their admiration by chewing glass and proving his resistance to pain; he would invite them to beat him with bats and to stick needles into his body. Even today, sidelines of his act include using his body as a dart board and letting his chest be punctured with staples.

Lotito's technique is to cut objects into bite-size portions and to eat about 2 pounds of metal a day. He likes to first lubricate his digestive tract by drinking mineral oil, and then consume large quantities of water while he is eating.

Disbelieving doctors have frequently subjected Lotito to detailed examination, including X-ray, and have concluded that at least part of what he consumes is broken down by unusually powerful digestive juices.

Specialists have also found that the linings of his stomach and intestines are twice as thick as average. As a result, while he can eat metal and other apparently indigestible objects, his digestive system does not cope efficiently with soft foodstuffs such as eggs and bananas.

In 1981 he was attacked and stabbed, receiving severe life threatening internal injuries. He underwent major surgery and recovered surprisingly quickly. Three weeks later he ate a robot.

Life Coaching can Improve Creativity

"Are there any original ideas left in the world?"
"Someone else came up with that idea; is there anything else I can do?"
"I don't think there is any way else to solve this problem."

I judge a creative problem solving competition and am thrilled to NOT hear these statements from participants in the competition. The comments are however some of those from someone who decided that creativity has died.

At one point in time, the US Patent Office stated that everything that has been invented has been invented so there is no reason to keep the office open. Some people think this way and I'm sadden to think that they are no longer viewing creativity as a helpful to increase the quality of life. Working with a life coach can help you see just that.

You can approach any problem or challenge that requires a solution in a variety of ways. There are a multitude of ways to approach a problem. One benefit of working with a life coach is that he or she can show you how being creative can open new ways of thinking and horizons.

Any time you come up with your own idea, you are creating. Working with a life coach can help a person enhance his or her creative thinking and create their own innovative solution.

For example, your automobile stalls on a busy freeway due to a bad hose in the cooling system. Darn it all, it happens in a busy place.

Chewing gum attached to your car's hose may patch the leak. And for good measure you tie a rag over the hose to keep the gum in place. Granted, this is an impromptu repair, it might work enough for you to drive a few miles to can get the hose replaced. Think from the movie, Apollo 13, "Houston, we have a problem."

In the mid '80s and early 90's there was a television show called " MacGyver." MacGyver was pretty creative and crafty. Whenever he found himself in a difficult spot, he used the materials around him to save himself. That is an example of life coaching, finding your way out using what you know in a way you had not used it in the past..

I love that creativity is a continuing learning process and it is one that can be enriched through life coaching. You gain untold benefits, which you can use in real life situations.

Working with a life coach may mean you think out-of-the-box, and step into the unknown. You can never be sure of your ideas until you try them. As long as there is no perceived danger involved, it is always worth a try.

How To Clear Your Mind Of Negative Thoughts In 3 Simple Steps

If you're spending too much time worrying and obsessing, and thinking of how to clear your mind of negative thoughts, this article can help solve your problem.

We all have felt a little down and critical of ourselves at certain times in our lives; that's normal. But sometimes - without us realizing it - this negativity overwhelms us, overcomes us and cripples us.

In this world we're living in, our thoughts make our reality. Do you really want to live with this negativity? Surely you don't, and this is why it is important to learn how to clear your mind of negative thoughts.

Step 1: Question The Negative

When you find yourself with a negative thought, ask yourself, "Is this true?" This will give you the opportunity to prove this otherwise, while at the same time build your self-esteem. Oftentimes, these thoughts are unfavorable things which you think might happen in the future. Take note of the word "might."

That means they may or may not happen; and most of the time, they will only come true if you continue focusing your attention and mind to them. So stop thinking about them to avoid attracting them!

Don't let such thoughts trick you and get the best of you. It's true that sometimes you can be your own worst enemy.

Learn how to clear your mind of negative thoughts by discontinuing being the one who puts them there. One way is to shift your attention to something you're grateful for or something that makes you happy. Which brings us to the next step ...

Step 2: Choose To Be Happy

Life isn't easy. You will encounter problems and challenges, and there will almost always be people who would want to hurt you and bring you down.

But remember, happiness is a constant decision. When you wake up and choose to be happy, you are stripping these negative thoughts of their power to affect you and the way you live.

When you choose to be happy, you choose to empower yourself. Eventually, when you have learned how to clear your mind of negative thoughts, resisting them will be easier and will come naturally.

Step 3: Find Inspiration

The reason negative thoughts thrive is because we let them. We become so overwhelmed by them that we miss to see the good and beautiful things around us.

Fight pessimism by surrounding yourself with feel-good things. Immerse yourself in things that you find interesting - such as art, music and movies.

Try new hobbies or work at improving your old ones. Read inspirational books, or watch funny videos or shows. Make a "bucket list" and accomplish them one by one. Inspiration is everywhere and if you focus on capturing it, negative things won't have a place in your mind.

Stop accepting negativity as part of your life, and replace it with optimism. Learn how to clear your mind of negative thoughts and see your world open up to positive changes.

I'm sure you've heard the saying "What we resist persists". When you resist change you're resisting the natural order of nature. It's like telling the seasons not to change, or trees not to grow. Don't let that happen in your life.

Do Get Used To Consciously Challenging Yourself

Transformation is all about moving from one state to another. It's tempting to think that one state is inherently better than another. It's tempting to fantasize about how much better things will be in the future, or reminisce about the good old days. When you learn to cultivate an attitude that everything is evolving perfectly, you can develop a sense of inner peace.

Don't Compare Yourself To Others

Everyone changes at their own pace. It's not a race. There are no winners or losers. Comparing your journey of personal transformation with others is meaningless. That's like trying to compare who's having the most fun at a party, which would pretty much guarantee no-one would have any fun.

Dynamic Productivity - Getting the Best Personal and Professional YOU

I have thought a lot about productivity - productivity either in the workplace or at home and I have come to the conclusion time management and productivity go hand in hand.

In fact, time management PLUS productivity leads to dynamic productivity. Dynamic productivity is an objective we should all try to achieve - its reaching a high level of productivity in a way which dynamically improves your performance.

You know the feeling - it creeps up on you. Things are going well then, bam, it all turns to custard.

You can't focus, your enthusiasm fades, it all moves to the backburner. Next thing you're convincing yourself it wasn't important any way!

I have wondered about why this should be for some time now. Is it a mindset thing? And what is "mindset" anyway?

If you think about it, "mindset" is many things. It is things like confidence, ambition, determination, focus, being consistent, delivering against your objectives, managing your time. To be productive you have to have the will to succeed.

If you don't have the "will" it is unlikely you will ever be productive. You'll never reach your goals.

That's when I started to think about dynamic productivity. To be productive you need to reduce the amount of time you waste. You need to stay focused, self confident and consistent.

Before you even start you should have your end goal in mind. Things like: Why am I doing this? What am I trying to achieve? Can I be more efficient? How am I travelling against my plan?

Dynamic productivity is ensuring all of these aspects stay positive but, importantly it is the recognition that they are all variables! Each aspect change by time of day, by the amount of effort required at any one time, and your desire to succeed.

If you 'get' dynamic productivity you will force yourself to build an unbreakably strong mindset to achieve no matter what. It might be at work, or at home or any of the activities you are involved with. You'll manage your time and be dynamically productive no matter what.

And, you need to have a plan - how else will you know what you are going to do the next day, the next week, the next year? No matter what the day or week brings, you must stay flexible but have the objectives (ie your plan) clearly in mind. That's what is meant by "dynamic".

Your tasks should be aligned with the end vision in mind. Only then will your daily and weekly tasks become easier to complete.

Hugging Banned in New Jersey

TRENTON, NJ - Chris Christie has followed the Matawan-Aberdeen Middle School, and has banned hugging anywhere in New Jersey.

“We are a no hugging state,” Governor Chris Christie reportedly told reporters yesterday. “If we catch anyone hugging it will be a $100 fine for the first offense, $250 or the second offense and $1,000 for the third. After that, it’s jail.”

Christie got the idea from Matawan school district that decided that middle school children shouldn’t hug each other. “It’s not normal or natural,” said school superintendent John Jacobus. “If kids hug, then the next thing you know there having babies and we can’t have that happen in our school.”

Governor Christie doesn’t mind if people hug, but he thought it was a good way to raise revenue for the state. “We need money, and hugs are something that can generate a good deal of revenue for our state.”

“It’s stupid, I’ve never heard of such a thing. Why can’t you hug?” New Jersey resident Steve Smallwood said. “That’s how we grew up, with affection. You hug, you kiss.”

Stop Procrastinating and Start Practicing

I can already tell that the subject of procrastination is going to rumble up some deep rooted emotions because when it comes to slacking off, putting things off, or making excuses for your lack of motivation everyone is guilty of it from time to time.

The real issue when it comes to procrastinating is how to get to the root of it so you can yank it out and replant it with a healthier foundation. One of my clients said it beautifully, "one of the things I learned from Angel was that when you procrastinate to another time, you are just prolonging the frustration and cheating yourself out of a natural "high" that comes after it."

So what is the hardest thing about getting things going? Here are the top 5 reasons I hear on a regular basis from friends and clients when it comes to their excuses as to why they haven't taken action to achieving their goals:

- Lack of time
- Lack of money
- Health issues
- Fear they are not good enough
- Need to learn more/don't know how to start

Ok, all those "procrastination excuses" could very well sound viable and indeed be the truth, but here's where the disconnect doesn't sit with me and thus I'll never let my clients get away with hiding behind excuses.

1. When you lack time, you are actually saying you don't want it badly enough

When you want something so bad, you make the time. For most people it takes being completely, 100% being fed up with their current life situation to finally be ready to make change. I've said it before and I'll say it again, "if you want to change your life, you are going to have to change things in your life."

You need to give something up to make room for new experiencing to come into your life. Practice freeing up more of your time, even if that means you cut back how much you work or how much money you make. Bigger things will present themselves when there is enough room in your life for those things to show up.

2. "I don't have enough money" 

This excuse is the most common of the 5, but I'll tell you that lack of money really is a lack of motivation and lacking motivation is a way to procrastinate. A few years ago I had to close my business because I was in $35,000 in credit card debt and with the creditors calling me non-stop, I was forced to make some changes in my life. I found myself penniless and jobless - talk about not having enough money!

The one thing you need to realize about money is that it is energy. If you have toxic feeling around money, you will have a hard time attracting it into your life. Trust me, I went through the highs and lows of money my entire life. Change how you think about money, and you'll realize money was never really the problem it was really your motivation.

3. Feeling tired, unattractive, or suffering from an auto-immune disease

These are some of the more challenging procrastination excuses, but when you look at your life as holistic, you will see that your health can be changed just like the amount of money you want to make per year can change. How badly do you want to look and feel better?

I suffered from acne, psoriasis and anxiety/panic attacks my entire adult life. It took me being so sick and tired of dealing with the health issues for me to stop procrastinating and start practicing a better health routine. When you practice a new routine, before you know it, you are doing those things subconsciously. Just as your body was designed to heal itself, you were meant to feel like the superstar you are.

4. Oh the big scary word "FEAR" 

This is probably what all of the procrastination is really about, fear. Not everyone is a big fan of digging deep inside for the answer because when you look inside you realize there is pain and insecurity that lives in there. And that's okay.

However, pain and insecurity are simply a toxic energetic vibration you've put around something that you think would cause you to feel uncomfortable. In actuality, fear isn't real at all; it's simply a procrastination mechanism so you don't have to step outside your comfort zone. But why not? Do you know what lives on the other side of your fears? BLISS!

The true joy of life lives behind all those toxic feelings you've put around your dreams. When you put one foot in front of the other, you show "fear" who is boss. Don't let your excuses get in the way of your dreams. You are far too gifted to let something fictitious rule your life. Practice stepping outside of your comfort zone.

5. So you are ready to stop procrastinating, but you still aren't getting started

Why is that? The last reason I hear from my clients as to why they aren't pursuing their goals is because they don't know how to get started or they think they need more education or experience. This excuse is your inability to be resourceful. Do you know how many people love and adore you. These people would love to see you succeed and help you in anyway possible.

If you told your best friend tonight that you wanted to start your own business, you can bet she'd have an earful of ideas, possible clients for you, or a skill she could offer you to help you get started right now. So why aren't you telling people what it is you want so they can help you achieve it? Practice telling your loved ones what you need to pursue your dreams. Then sit back and be grateful you are so loved.

Anyone can change. It's truly a matter of trying something different, making room for change to happen, and being fed up enough to motivate you to change. When you do these things, you start attracting people, circumstances, and situations that will help you take your health and happiness to the next level. Practice telling others what you need and what you want. Just start there.

You will be shocked to learn how many referrals and recommendations they'll have for you. And before you know it, you're no longer procrastinating; you are thrilled and excited to get started today!

Guide to Goal Setting - 5 Steps to Achieving Your Goals

Would you like to make any changes in your life? Do you wish things were different? We all have hopes and dreams. Sadly too few people realize their dreams.

What's the difference between those who achieve their dreams and those who don't? The answer is goals. What's the difference between dreaming and realizing your dreams? Action. Goals are putting action to our dreams.

Wishing and taking action are two different things. To realize your dreams you must have a plan of action. A road map if you will. I've never heard of a road map to nowhere. A map will take you where you want to go. One step at a time you go to your car. You start the engine. Put the car in drive. And start your trip one mile at a time. One mile after the other until you finally reach your destination. To reach a goal we break it up into small goals. One step after the other.

With goal setting techniques, you can accomplish your dreams. Let's look at some simple steps to guide you to the finish line.

1. Pick a dream

What do I really want? Where do I want to go? What do I want to do now? Next make a decision that this dream is attainable. Now put legs and feet on your dream and make it a goal. Legs are your determination, and the feet equal action.

2. Visualize your goal

From now on it's no longer a dream, it's a goal. By changing your thinking, you make it a goal. This is a goal setting technique that demands a lot of reflection on your part.

3. Write your goal down on paper

Be very specific when describing your goal. Don't be vague, that's the difference between wishing, and reaching your goal. Write your goal on a 3 x 5 index card or a post-it note. Place it on your night stand, or bathroom mirror. Make it the first thing you see in the morning, and the last thing you read at night. If your goal is to buy a new car, find a picture, and look at the picture to stay motivated.

4. Step by step plans

Identify your key action steps. Ask yourself, how will I go about this? What schedule or strategy should I focus on? Break your goal into pieces. Don't become overwhelmed. Create a strategy of short-term and the long-term goals. For example let's say your goal is to lose 20 pounds. Create a strategy of short-term goals, losing 5 lbs a week. It's very important that you put time limits in your goals. But this does not have to be written in stone.

5. Tools

How do you want to lay out your plans? You could use a notebook and write down your plan. You could use a word processor on your computer. There are free "goals" software programs that you can find, and download on the internet. There is a cool, free program, called "Freemind". This is a mind mapping program. I think that it would make a great tool for planning (step by step), to reach your final goal. You can find "Freemind" using your favorite search engine.

By observing the goal setting techniques cited above, our dreams are just a few steps away from us. If you have questions, use your favorite search engine. Type the subject, or a question, followed by "government information". You would be amazed at all the free information you can find.

Go to the "Reference Dept." of your local Library and speak with the attendant there. Finding information is what they do for a living. Let nothing stop you from crossing the finish line.

Triumph Over Adversity - My Story

My story begins at age 8 after my little brother had been given a wooden billy cart for his birthday. Being the more extroverted one, I was keen to try out the new "vehicle" and see how it performed.

At the end of our street, the intersecting road rolled down off the hill in a slightly more than gentle slope, culminating in a sweeping right turn at the bottom - excellent for testing my brother's new billy cart. Of course, he was too young to ride such a sophisticated piece of machinery, so I rode while he ran behind!

The theory of the ride was great: take the cart to the top of the hill, cascade down the footpath (sidewalk) to the bottom and hang a screeching right turn just before we catapulted across the intersecting street.

It was on one of these runs that things went horribly wrong. A small, unpaved laneway crossed the street on which we were playing. We set off down the hill in the usual way when I noticed a car travelling down the road in the same direction.

He made a left-hand turn into the laneway, so I focused my attention on the end of the course. Unfortunately, the drunken driver then reversed across the road into the laneway which I was crossing!

The aftermath of the accident saw me spending twelve months in hospital and rehab, which severely impacted on a critical learning period of my life. Fortunately, I had no permanent external injuries, but was left with a learning "lag" that took me my entire school life to make up. I was also left with a lingering condition that drifted me into periodic "absences" of consciousness.

In the early years, I don't remember being particularly aware that my condition was a problem, except for the fact that I periodically ended up in the women's toilet, but couldn't remember how I got there, or why!

My condition was annoying, but not debilitating, until I reached my 15th birthday. Something, (maybe male hormones) triggered a sudden increase both in severity and number of what had by this time, become seizures.

I had always struggled with school, but Year 10 was a total disaster, since I spent more time being dragged out from under the toilet door after smashing myself to bits on the toilet bowl, than I did in the classroom! The result of this "year of disaster" was that I left school before my 16th birthday.

The years that followed, saw me in and out of multiple jobs as I had seizures and systematically destroyed the display shelves of the businesses I worked for, and tarnished their reputations by repeatedly being discovered in the ladies toilets!

By the time I had reached the age of 20, I had lost my driver's licence, my job, and many of my friends. By this time, however, I had also come firmly to the conclusion that I had two choices in life; I could either curl up in the corner and cry "poor me" and hope to die, or I could take this "monster" head-on and determine to beat it.

I'm not afraid of many things in life, and I'm certainly not afraid of failure; the thing that scares me most, is being accused of not trying! With that in mind, I determined that I would take control of the situation (at least to the extent to which it was controllable) and beat this "thing".

The day that I announced that I was planning a round-the-world research tour to study education of Deaf children, my family decided that I had gone completely mad! My father was horrified, a sentiment which was not helped by the fact that on the day I collected my passport and tickets, I had a seizure on the way home and casually handed all my documents to a perfect stranger in the street!

I now have the unenviable record of having had an Epileptic seizure in almost every country on the globe! But, I did it! Despite all the limitations, I conquered the "beast" and spent 9 months travelling through America, Europe, Russia and Asia and completed the most comprehensive report on education of Deaf children internationally, that had ever been undertaken.

Following my tour, the succeeding years saw my condition deteriorate rapidly until the point where I was having 20 seizures a day and was completely dependent on others for my safety. I was unable to go out alone for fear that I might fall off a railway station or lie down in the middle of a busy street. I became a danger to myself, frequently falling down stairs or catching busses to places, having no idea where I was.

I met a woman and fell in love (as one tends to do); it was a rude awakening for her though, since on my first visit to her house, (on a cold, rainy night) I had a seizure and wandered outside. She found me trying to climb in through the toilet window - looking for the ladies toilet again, of course! Guess I should have told her!

We decided to get married and she began to discover what I was really like. On the day before our wedding, I had an appointment with my neurologist. It was a rainy day - again - and after I left the appointment, I ventured into town (alone) to buy a gift of perfume for her to wear the next day.

The smell of the perfume at the perfume counter must have affected me, and I had a seizure right there in the store. I placed my bag of medication on the perfume counter, turned around and saw myself in a mirror. "That's me", I thought. "What am I doing in there? How did I get into that mirror?"

This confused me no end, so I turned and walked out into the street. Unfortunately, I didn't know that they had dug a big hole outside where the street was being repaired. Oh, did I mention that it was raining? You have no idea what an idiot I looked as I pulled myself out of that hole, covered in mud and perfume and dressed in my best suit!

As the years went on, I began to lose any sense of hope for the future. I was a pensioner, with no money, no future and no hope of ever having a future. We were so poor, that my then wife and I used to do the rounds of the shopping centres looking for those free give-aways and cooking demos so that we could collect enough food to feed the kids at night! This was an endlessly hopeless cause for me, but I didn't know what else to do except to keep on battling.

One day, after having been rescued from a fall from our local railway platform onto the tracks, I determined that I need to do something radical. I called my neurologist and asked to be part of a new experimental surgery that had had some minor successes with patients with my condition.

The surgeon carefully explained to me that the surgery was not guaranteed and the risks were that I might be a vegetable or worse. I explained to him that I was already a virtual vegetable and that another fall off the railway station might mean death anyway. Basically, I had nothing to lose.

It turned out to be the best decision I ever made. The last seizure I ever had, was just as they were closing the incision in my head! Ten days after surgery, I was in the front yard, swinging a pick! I'm completely cured and these days, don't even take an aspirin.

Since then, I have completed university degrees, lived and worked in Japan and started businesses. While living and working in Japan, I made another important decision and married the woman who is now my right hand in the business. I've been everywhere and done everything including taking a position as the CEO of a remote Indigenous community in the middle of the Australian desert.

My surgery was only 15 years ago, so my life is basically only 15 years old. Now, I'm doing all the things that a pensioner with no hope, could never have done, making up for all the lost years.

Because of my condition, all the focus of attention throughout the years has been on me. One of the regrets I have is that my younger brother (whose billy cart we were riding and who witnessed the whole accident) was left with profound emotional scars from the whole affair and was allowed to slip through the cracks of emotional support, to struggle with his own "monsters".

This story is not just about me though. It's about what can be achieved by the human spirit when you make the choice to not let the "monsters" beat you.

What Are You Passionate About?

For some people this question feels frustrating and overwhelming. What do you do if you've always lived your life doing what other people want and being who other people expect you to be? What do you do if you've never had the opportunity to explore your passions or to get excited about anything?

What do you do if your wants, needs and desires have been beaten down for most of your life and so you have absolutely no idea what you're passionate about?

It happens. It was true for me and I've worked with several clients who have the same challenge. I've attended many workshops where the presenter suggests that, to get in touch with what you're really passionate about, you need to get back in touch with what you loved to do as a child.

And that's a very effective strategy - except what if there was no fun, excitement and passion allowed when you were a child? What if you have no positive memories of that time? Clearly, you need to find other ways of exploring what passions lay buried inside you.

It's easy to think there's something wrong with you if you don't know what you're passionate about. It's something people talk about a lot and yet, for some people, even the word 'passion' is completely foreign. So if this applies to you, here are some ways to explore and uncover what's buried inside you so that you can access your true and authentic self and live a joy filled life - yes, it is possible.

Change the word
If you find the word 'passion' a difficult one to embrace then don't use it. Instead, think about what interests you the most. What do you enjoy doing, talking about, reading or learning about? What do you get excited about? Is there something that, when you're doing this, time seems to go by very quickly? Start by making a list of those things.

Explore

Give yourself permission to explore this. You can try things and then decide that's not for you and move on to something else. You may be holding yourself back because you think you have to get it exactly right first time. You don't. If you embrace something because you think it's 'the thing' but then find after 6 months that you don't enjoy it any more, that's okay. You're simply exploring.

Journal

Use your journal or notebook to gain insights into your true nature. I find it helpful to do this exercise using specific statements. For example, complete the following statements:

What I really love doing is.....
What I get most excited about is.....
If I could do anything in the world that I wanted I would.....
If I could try anything it would be....

You get the idea. Think of your own statements and allow yourself to write without really thinking about it. Just see what comes up.

Visualize
Look through magazines to find pictures words and statements that appeal to you. If you find something you like, cut it out. Once you have a stack of pictures/words, paste them onto a piece of poster board to create your own vision board. Place this somewhere where you will see it every day.

By looking at this visual representation of things that you like, you will open yourself up to being able to identify other things that you like and enjoy. Seeing a visual representation of things that you really like can be helpful to attract to you more of what you really want.

Take the passion test
There's a great book called The Passion Test by Janet Bray Attwood and Chris Attwood - read the book and take the test to help you begin the process of discovering what you want and who you really are.

If you don't know what you're passionate about because you've never had the opportunity before to open yourself up to your true and authentic self, I hope these ideas will help you to get started.

Identifying and setting your goals can play a very important role in motivating you to realize your vision for the future. Goal setting helps you to choose where you want to go in life and what you wish to accomplish.

As soon as you identify where you want to go, you can begin to focus on achieving your goals. The ability to spot distractions that might lure you away from your chosen course will help.

Well-defined goals that are highly motivating will help you get into the habit of setting and achieving your goals. Your confidence and self esteem will grow as you start recognizing your abilities.

When you set clearly defined goals for yourself, you can track your progress and take pride in your achievements. Goal setting techniques are employed by various achievers, including successful business people.

Goal setting techniques focus your acquisition of knowledge and help you to organize your time so that you can make the most of your life.

Setting your goals

Try to select one goal for each category. Next, break each goal into small numbers of really significant goals that you can focus on.

Make sure the goals you are setting are ones that you genuinely want to achieve, and not something others expect you to accomplish. Always remain true to yourself when setting goals and discuss your plans with your family, spouse and friends so that they are familiar with your goals.

Self Development - Learning To Love Yourself

Learning to love yourself is for most people a life-long journey, with ups and downs. For some it might be a very conscious one, for others they might be totally oblivious to the fact. Let's have a look at what's happening on the path to self-love.

Born to be loved

Most of us have been born into the arms of doting parents, being loved and cuddled as a baby whose needs were highly attended to. When we grow up and become more independent, the attention shifts and individualization brings multiple changes and challenges to the primary relationship between parent and child/teenager.

Love for self being strained

Then there comes the time when a child understands what others are saying and reacts with hurt or similar feelings when another child or their own parent says unpleasant things. Is it then when we start to lose the unquestionable love and acceptance we had for ourselves?

Especially during teenage years when we start to socialize more outside the primary family relationship and build intimate relationships with our peers, we are extremely vulnerable to the opinions of others. In the process of building up a self-image we take on what we hear from outside and build it into the picture we have of ourselves and the world around us.

Messages from the news and magazines add to this confusion: Either we are too fat, too thin, not clever enough, unimportant, too loud, not loud enough, too small, too big, too pale etc.

The spectrum of self-love

Loving one's self can range from being totally narcissistic to having no confidence and self-love. Many of us will have heard messages of parents and/or other influential people trying to steer us away from becoming too self obsessed or narcissistic. But how about adequate, meaningful messages that would build up a healthy self-image where self-love could reside?

The journey of learning to love yourself

In the end it's our own journey to re-install the self-love that we have lost along the way. Maybe it is part of our purpose in life to reignite the love and go through whatever is part of this quest. Many physical illnesses have on a metaphysical level something to do with 'lack of self-love'.

Popular self-help books teach you to stand in front of the mirror and tell yourself: 'I love myself' or 'I am beautiful.' For someone not used to think favorably about one's self this probably sounds very strange or even ridiculous.

Ask yourself:
  • How much do I really love myself the way I am?
  • In what ways would I like to be different?
  • When do I ever smile at myself and my 'being' (rather than my achievements)?
  • How accepting am I of my flaws?
  • How often do I speak unfavorably of myself?
The answer to these questions will give you a picture of your level of self-love. Now think about how much you love your pet, your child, and your partner? Do you love and accept them more than you love yourself? I bet they are not absolutely perfect either. So why are you so much harsher with yourself?

Maybe now it's time to start loving yourself - whatever way you choose to do this.

4 Strategies to Overcome Any Obstacle

There are few among us who don't have dreams, desires, projects or goals that we haven't been able to achieve. Or perhaps it's a nasty habit we want to break. Often we haven't even been able to take the first step.

I Want....

For some it's career goals; start your own business, change or advance your career, or continue your education. For others, it may be a health goal: quit smoking, lose weight, or exercise more. So many seem to struggle with disorganization and clutter (if you have piles, you know who you are.) Financial goals can be especially difficult, as can habits of procrastination and lackluster productivity.

The good news is, we can be successful in any area. The bad news is, we do have to put in some work. Simply deciding what we want or making the decision to change a behavior is not enough.

We first need to understand, that it makes no difference what we're trying to achieve, the process, preparation and strategy is the same. The most important step is the first; START. Just take that first step, it the most difficult. As with anything, it gets easier as you gain momentum.

Overcome Obstacles

1. Be aware of barriers

Examine past failures. It's important to gain an understanding of what has stopped you from getting what you want or making positive changes in the past. Look back at personal failures (failure is not a dirty word, just an opportunity to learn,) as well as professional aspirations where you just couldn't quite hit the mark. What got in the way? Why did you stop trying? If you want a different outcome this time, you have to eliminate the obstacles, the barriers to success.

2. Examine patterns of behavior

We are creatures of habit, easily slipping back into behaviors we have learned and practiced in the past. Unfortunately, many of these behaviors are not helpful. In fact, they may be the biggest reason we are unable to change.

Do you have a certain pattern of behavior that keeps popping up and getting in the way of your goal? Do you self-sabotage, or make excuses? Do you keep so much on your plate that there is no energy left for something new? Do you tend to give up or refuse to ask for help? All of these are common disruptive behaviors that stand in the way of change. As the famous saying goes, we are our own worst enemy.

3. Watch out for triggers

What situations are most likely to cause a relapse? Do you slip into unhealthy habits around particular people? Are certain surroundings more difficult than others are? If you want to quit smoking, don't take breaks with other smokers. Trying to lose weight; minimize eating out, especially buffets. Is the mall a temptation to spend money? Stay away or leave credit cards at home.

4. Plan ahead

The secret is to determine what has prevented you from succeeding in the past and to plan for a different outcome. Develop a strategy to overcome obstacles before they happen. Put a strategy in place before a problem arises. That's much more effective than trying to use willpower at the time.

If you struggle to exercise with regularity in the morning, put your clothes out the night before. Always wanted to start a business, but just couldn't get started? Find a mentor to walk you through, to help identify pitfalls and suggest strategies that work. Has procrastination become a habit? Or spending too much time on Facebook? Set a timer.

Finally

Whatever your goal, get help, enlist support, find a partner, or ask someone who's already been successful at what you want to do. You can do it. Change is possible.

How Personal Development Saved My Life

Ten years ago I was pregnant with my daughter, working as a receptionist in a center for disabled adults and children and married to an alcoholic.

We lived in Phoenix, Arizona, thousands of miles from my family, my friends and all the familiar comforts of my home in North Carolina. That made it easy to know I wanted more out of my life, but how I could make that happen felt impossible.

Now, as I find myself far along my journey of personal development, I can reflect upon all I have learned, the people and places that affected me along the way, and how I can build upon my past to continue moving forward.

Not long after the birth of my daughter, my husband at the time attended a seminar about becoming financially independent while working from home. Never before had I seen such excitement in his eyes when he came home that night.

He explained how he would work for the company as an independent contractor selling personal development tools. Some of the leading salesmen were averaging $50,000 a month recruiting others and selling their products. While we were both enticed by the income possibilities, I was also intrigued with the products. I wanted to know more about this personal development stuff, and how could it teach me to be successful and get everything I want out of life?

It was through this business opportunity that I was introduced to Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich. I had never heard of it but everyone said it was a must read, so I dove right in.

Reading that book was a pivotal event in my life, changing my pattern of thinking for the better. I truly believe this book is not only for the entrepreneurial minded individual who is involved in sales and/or coaching, but people who want to improve their lives and be empowered to believe that anything is possible if you just don't give up!

Life was no less challenging as the months passed. I was raising a baby and struggling to be a good wife to a man who dealt with his demons by tipping the bottle on a nightly basis instead of studying the personal development tools that he so aggressively pushed on his prospects.

He lacked the desire and the will power to make the necessary changes in his life in order to be successful and as a result, the business opportunity he so eagerly went after flopped. I mentally returned to Hill's book on a continual basis and knew that something better was in store for me if I just hung in there and believed that I deserved better.

By the time my daughter turned one I knew that my marriage would not last much longer. I could not endure the emotional and psychological abuse and decided to return to North Carolina to be closer to my family for the support I knew I would need for what proved to be a difficult and emotionally draining divorce.

Fast forward several years and my husband and I are divorced. Though I was glad to be free of my toxic marriage, I recall being in a state of despair and Googled something like "What can I do with my life?"

That single keyword search brought me to the website of personal development guru Steve Pavlina. Steve, after landing in jail charged with felony grand theft, knew that he had to change his life or he was going down fast. Thus began his journey of personal development.

While I did not agree with everything that Steve subscribed to, I studied him diligently, reading all of his articles and rebooting my own journey of self-improvement after neglecting it over the years when I needed it the most. That was five years ago and I have come so far since those days.

Applying the personal development tools I learned helped me get through some dark times in my life: dealing with PTSD after my ex-husband assaulted me in front of our daughter and her sister; trying to come to terms with the fact that he will never change; losing several jobs in a bad economy; being a single parent and having to pay a mortgage on unemployment with no child support. I could go on, but for brevity's sake I won't.

I don't know where I would be today if I had not stumbled upon Steve's blog. I learned about the Law of Attraction, limiting beliefs, how to find your life purpose and so much more.

I used the Law of Attraction to figure out exactly what I wanted in a partner and attracted my best friend, who is now my husband. I sometimes wonder how I got so lucky. Then I remember everything I have been through in the past decade, and all my work studying personal development. I realize the universe did exactly what it was supposed to: it gave me what I asked for!

I continue to study personal development on a daily basis. I love learning new skills and strategies for making my life better. Where I am far from perfect, I also understand that life is about the journey. I want to make the ride as smooth as possible and grab every moment that I have on this earth with a passion!

Why Is Change So Hard?

Why do we have so much difficulty making changes in our lives? Our friends come to us for advice and we help set them straight. We watch with satisfaction as they take the first steps down a new path that will lead them away from their self-destructive habits to a new life of mental health.

Then six months (or even six weeks) later we find them back in the old, self-defeating groove that had led them to seek our counsel in the first place. What happened? Wasn't our advice any good? Or were our friends simply deficient in will power? Why is change so hard?

Suppose things were different. Suppose change were easy. A friend would point out some deficiency in our approach to life, we would thank him or her for noticing, make the appropriate changes, and enjoy the improvement in our well-being. If change were easy, pretty soon we'd all be perfect. What's getting in our way?

It all goes back to our bifurcated mind. Our emotional mind, the only really useful mind we had for the first five years of our lives, figured out early on how to keep us alive. The emotional mind finds change threatening. It has worked out how to assure our survival. Moving to a new place could prove fatal, so the emotional mind resists the change.

Our rational mind hates to be in conflict with the emotional mind, so it finds all kinds of convincing excuses (not surprisingly, we call them rationalizations) for abandoning change. Good advice may persuade our rational mind for a time but before long the emotional mind steps in and nixes the plans.

A decision to take a new path will not keep you on it for long. If you don't deal with the emotional mind-your inner child-you'll soon find yourself back in the old familiar groove. It may help to think of how you'd typically deal with a five-year-old. Let's suppose you've decided to reduce your intake of cookies.

Before long that inner kid will have you thinking about nothing but cookies, and will nag at you ceaselessly, the way kids do, until you give in. Then you'll be rationalizing away the importance of cookie reduction, perhaps convincing yourself that it's better to try and lose weight in the spring when it's easier to exercise.

This isn't to say that you can't change, but it takes a good deal more than just reading a good idea in a magazine or self-help book and deciding to apply it in your own life. You must get your emotional mind to buy into the change or it will never take place. This means healing the rift between your two minds, and persuading Little You to trust Big You.

That doesn't happen just by wishing it so. You have to talk to yourself and soothe your fears just as you would an upset five-year-old. You need to get in touch with the core beliefs that your emotional mind depends on to keep you alive and then alter those that interfere with the change you want to make. This may require the intervention of a therapist. It will certainly require an attitude of self-love and self-awareness.

How You Should Be Thinking To Be Successful

You are a person with a fire that has not yet been extinguished by the harshness of life. You still believe that you have the ambition to be one of the greatest, most successful people in the nation.

You spend your time pondering on ways to use your creative genius to be the next Henry Ford, Wright Brothers or Bill Gates. While all your friends party, you plan on how to make your dream a reality, foregoing instant gratification and short term gain for long term satisfaction and success.

You know that even though the cards are stacked against you, you still hold true to the belief that you are not destined for a life of mediocrity, not destined to have a life that is only vanilla, plain, flavorless, or black and white. Instead you see yourself as a High Definition, Neapolitan flavored, risk taker.

You refuse to be the "rule", you pride yourself for being the exception to the "rule". You are the one who follows their dream and won't subscribe to the "noise" of the "Nay Sayer". You study instead of party to become the best you, that you can be. And you refuse to watch life from the bleachers or the couch, you choose to participate.

You realize that it is easier to hang with friends then it is to perfect your craft. You know that it is easier to miss a day then it is to stick to a dream. You know its easier to procrastinate then it is to give it your all everyday. But you also know that its easier to look back on your life and know that you gave it your all then to live with regret.

When people see you they do not see a failure or laziness, instead they see determination, self-assurance, courage, and ambition. Fearlessness is not a word, its a lifestyle. It gets you past obstacles that stop most from accomplishing their dreams. Your presence ignites a fire in others who had previously lost that zest and will in their own lives. You are a visionary, a way maker, a maverick of sorts.

You see yourself mentioned with the greats. You see yourself being significant like Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. Strong like Muhammad Ali. An innovator like Edison. A genius like Einstein. A dreamer like Aristotle. A leader like Theodore Roosevelt. And a game changer like Obama.

You know "time" is precious especially since you can't buy it or buy it back. You refuse to disappoint yourself because you are unsure of the outcome, you act in spite of fear. If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything. And you will die before you let your aspirations die like they didn't matter.

You know that that the richest place on earth is the grave yard where all the unrealized and untried dreams lay. You refuse to be that selfish, you refuse to hide your gifts, dreams and talents from the world that can benefit. You want the world to better because you lived and you intend to make it happen.
