Serendipity. Even if you have no idea what the word means, the sound of it rolling off your tongue inspires imagination.

In truth, serendipity is an unexpected surprise, a pleasant discovery, a happy accident. It is those moments in life when something unexplainable happens that potentially changes the course of your life, even if only for a short time.

For serendipity to be present in your life, you must be willing to live in the moment, to take the occasional detour. If you travel the same route every day or talk to the same circle of friends all the time, the chances for new things to occur, for the unexpected to befall you, are limited.

A wonderful movie named "Serendipity" starring Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack illustrates the concept of serendipity wonderfully.

The two meet, share a wonderful evening and decide to leave their relations ship to fate. He writes his name and phone number on a $5 bill and must circulate it. She writes hers on the inside cover of a book and must leave the book somewhere. If the two are meant to be together, they reason, they will find the book and the $5 bill and be reunited. - hence, a happy accident.

Let spontaneity and daring be part of your life. Walk to a different bus stop on your way to work. Buy coffee from a different shop. Visit the local tourist spots. As residents of a locale, we often put off visiting our own landmarks and parks because we take them for granted and think we'll get around to it someday. Don't put it off.

If you love art and music, visit a sports event. Do something different, step outside your comfort zone for a few minutes each week. Be really daring and do it every day, in some way, it's a way to practice your creativity.

By opening yourself to new experiences, your senses are put on alert. It's as though your brain says, 'Hey, everybody, wake up. We've never been here before.' Will you meet a new friend? Might you discover a new hobby? Could you see something that unlocks your writer's block or inspires a new painting? Who knows? Unless you take the chance to discover the surprises that await you, you will not know either.

Even if you don't meet new friends or discover new hobbies, you will have expanded your world and your knowledge base and even that can be a form of serendipity and new possibilities.

Marita Steffe would like to invite you to explore your creativity.
