Everything starts in the mind - whether the greatest success, or simply a trip to the shop to purchase bread - we visualize it on some level no matter what. In high pressure sports such as footall it is not just physical preparation but the mental preparation will be key to their success.

In tense situations such as the penalty shoot in soccer, or the play off hole in a golf major, the test will be of successful visualization as much as technique. This visualization is recognized as "the seedling of success", as without it nothing would ever develop.

We unconsciously visualize on and off all day to a certain degree, but you can improve your visualization skills to go far beyond this level of everyday thought. Some are able to develop their visualization skills and achieve massive success because of it - people such as top sportsmen and olympic medalists, and businessmen like Donald Trump and Bill Gates.

The extremely rich, the a-list superstars, the world class sports stars. They all create a picture on their minds of their success again and again before they achieve it for real. When they visualize they really feel like they've achieved their goal.

Visualization is however not only for people who achieve massive success in high profile positions, but can be used in any situations throughout our daily lives. I have an interview in a couple of weeks for a new job and I am visualizing not only the questions being asked but how I am going to perform successfully and feel throughout the interview. My visualization will focus on the opportunities I have to show my strengths and abilities and not my weaknesses or fears.

This degree of visualization is usually easier said than accomplished, some people find it comes effortlessly and can create highly effective, moving visualizations for prolonged time periods.

Making Creativity Your New Competitive Advantage

In today's digital economy, if it's linear, it's usually automated or outsourced! Think about it: What were you doing 10 years ago that's now accomplishable at the push of a button? Campaign management? Performance analytics? Data management and storage? Do you see a trend? So where are we headed?

Technology forecasters predict hundreds, if not thousands, of new products will enter the market over the next decade to handle routine activities. In data mining alone, we have seen incredible changes. Years ago, we spent weeks building predictive models by hand. Today, predictive modeling software delivers more powerful models through streamlined, menu-driven processes that take minutes!

So what does that mean to us? If our competitive edge is based on linear processes, our competition may be able to buy software that accomplishes the same thing within a few years. What can we do to stay competitive? Quit using half our brains!

In today's highly complex, competitive economy, our challenge is to create an environment that encourages "whole brain" thinking. To emphasize the importance, let's think of a simplified model of how the brain works and I recommend drawing this out.

To understand its function, the brain is divided into quadrants: The left cerebral mode handles the logical, analytic, and quantitative functions; the left limbic mode handles sequences (remember linear?), planned and detailed functions; the right cerebral mode handles the intuitive, integrative, synthesizing functions; and the right limbic mode handles the emotional, kinesthetic, feeling-based functions.

Most problem-solving occurs in the brain's left hemispheres. We begin in the left cerebral mode, where we memorize the correct answer. Then we move to the left limbic mode, where we make plans based on memorized rules and norms. This works well for many routine data-mining tasks, such as finding the average income of your customer base or calculating the response rate of a campaign.

But if you are facing a new challenge like unexpected account attrition or a spike in insurance claims - events for which you have no rules - the left side of the brain can't provide a solution. We completely miss the right-brain functions of intuition, integration, and synthesis, and so are unable to incorporate our emotions or feelings into solving a problem. By skipping the right side of the brain, we diminish our ability to think creatively.

In whole-brain problem solving, we begin in the left cerebral mode with the memorized answer. But we then move to the right cerebral mode and create a mental picture or image. This gives us a nonlinear view of the problem. When we move the problem into the right limbic mode, we may think of some atypical solutions or even have an "aha" experience. From there, we move back into the left limbic mode to formulate a solution.

So why is it so difficult to use creativity? First, creativity produces variance and decreases predictability. So if management has a high need for control, encouraging creative thinking is difficult. Another reason is that tapping into our creativity takes concentration. If our work environment is noisy and distracting, accessing the right side of the brain is difficult.

And, finally, creative thinking requires some "downtime" to get the juices flowing. Did you ever notice how you get great ideas in the shower or while exercising? You might argue that you do not have the time or it is not cost-effective. But creative ideas that lead to small improvements to a marketing campaign can save or make millions.

How can we encourage whole-brain thinking? This can be difficult if it requires a drastic change in the company culture. But we can take several steps to facilitate it for ourselves and our staff:

Encourage group discussions where ideas are embraced. Brainstorming is an excellent way to get the creative juices flowing. Change old habits: Use your non-dominant hand for routine tasks; take a different route to work. Create a workspace that helps you stay balanced: Play music; fill your office with objects d'art; spend a few minutes in silent contemplation each day. It's not a waste of time. It's incubation time for the next million-dollar idea!

Webster's defines genius as "Great mental capacity and inventive ability; esp., great and original creative ability in some art, science, etc." So the next time you effectively use your whole brain, they might call you a genius!

Your Actions Are What Define You

This article is a wake up call for every person that lies to themselves, and to others, about who and what they really are. You can talk yourself up all you want, you can say how you're a good person, you can say that you are this or that. The truth is that your actions are what ultimately define who and what you are, not your words.

A Stripper ... That Doesn't Strip

In case you aren't familiar with Sin City, it is a series of comics that was created by Frank Miller back in the nineties. In 2005 the movie adaptation came out, with the character of Nancy Callahan being played by Jessica Alba. What made that decision puzzling was that in the comics Nancy Callahan is a stripper, yet Jessica Alba has a strict no nudity clause in all of her movie contracts. So while the role was originally written to mirror the comics, in the end it was changed, and she ended up playing a stripper that didn't strip.

A Writer That Doesn't Write?

The reason I brought this somewhat absurd situation up, is that I realized I was doing the same thing, in a sense. I call myself a writer, yet I don't write on any kind of regular basis. My reasoning of being distracted by other things, and having serious writer's block, can only go so far. I'm sure other writers face the same kinds of obstacles (and worse), but they overcome them. It is time for me to align my actions with my words.

Haters Gonna Hate

Actions you repeatedly take can end up changing you into a different person, often without you even realizing it. You may not think of yourself as a negative person, yet if you often find yourself complaining, criticizing other people, and generally focusing on what is wrong with your life, then you are a negative person. It's all too easy to fall into detrimental behavior patterns, which is why you must stay ever vigilant about the actions you take on a regular basis.

Choose Your Path Wisely

Once you choose a path, the longer you stay on it, the harder it is to change. This goes for positive and negative paths both, so it is a good idea to take a brutally honest self-assessment at regular intervals to make sure you are on the right track. Making sure that your actions match your words is one of the best ways to start this self-assessment.

Mr. Peale wrote the book "The Power of Positive Thinking" in the 1950's. The book has sold millions of copies and is still a popular book in the self-help genre.

Many people who have read the book consider it life changing. Spending a few moments reading a review of the book and Peale's other works will convince you that there is at least some merit to the strategies he embraced.   • Only accept thoughts into your mind that reflect feelings of happiness, contentment and success
  • If you find unhappy or negative thoughts creeping into your consciousness try to refuse them or substitute them with thoughts that can help you achieve your goals
  • Use picture words when you converse with others. Use words that symbolize strength, harmony and the successes you hope to achieve
  • Before you take actions, make time to think them through and imagine them successful. This visualization can help shape the actual outcome
  • Read books and enjoy other media that inspires you
  • Avoid listening to things that upset you and focus on negativity. Unfortunately, the news can be one of the most detrimental things to your mental state
  • Surround yourself with others that think similarly to you
  • Walk tall and sit up straight. This boosts your own confidence and makes you appear stronger and more successful
  • Find a physical activity you enjoy and pursue it. Not only will it make you stronger, but it will help develop your positive attitude
  • Always expect the best results from any situation. Over time your own mental attitude will change your circumstances

The Law of Attraction is a metaphysical philosophy that goes hand in hand with the power of positive thinking. Broke down into simplest terms, the Law of Attraction is that like attracts like. So therefore, thinking that you have money, success or good relationships will attract these things into your life. Don't Break Your Promises

If a man isn't worth his word, then what is he worth? If his actions don't match those words, then what? You see we all know someone like that; all talk, no action. While it's easy to point fingers at others, it's a complete waste of energy. Focus on what you can do to ensure that all the things you say you're going to do get done.

Conviction

Say to yourself that you're sick and tired of the life you're leading and starting this day you are going to DO something about it. Believe that no matter what happens you will not veer off course and lose sight of the prize. Little miracles could truly happen in peoples lives in the simply had faith in themselves. Have the conviction to your faith in your boundless possibilities.

Perseverance

Say what you mean, mean what you say; this minute, this day and everyday. You'd be surprised how hard it can be to just be consistent day and day out. But, it is exactly those habits that separate those who succeed, and those you fail. Break a promise to yourself, and you let yourself down, hold yourself back, and keep yourself from the happiness you've always wanted.

Action

Make the slogan "Just Do It" you're daily mantra. Ensure that you do everything within your power to do all the things in a day you need to get you one step slower to your goals. Getting in the habit of not putting things off and taking control is an incredibly liberating experience. Yes, it's true, if you want something done you're going to have to do it yourself. There's no point in complaining, roll up your sleeve and get it done. You'll feel a million times better once you do.

Make lists

Try this out, make a bucket list of things you'd like to do in a year. Then break down what you each month to tick items off that list. Then make weekly lists if tasks that help you achieve your monthly goals. And the most important list ... your daily list of the things you're going to do each day that will help you achieve your ultimate goal.

You see great accomplishments are realized by doing to the little things everyday. Have a clear laid-out plan daily, weekly, and monthly will make it possible to track your progress, and create milestones to celebrate along the way.

Don't you be caught with your pants on fire telling long tales of things you hope to do, yet never get around to. It's not easy, but you can have all that you desire. And it all starts with a promise to yourself that you never break.

The New Year's Resolution Most People Never Make

I don't know about you but I've been trying to avoid all the food out there during this holiday season. It's like trying to ignore political ads when the TV is on.

It's almost impossible. It's tough NOT to gain weight. That's probably the reason so many people make a New Year's resolution to lose weight.

While many of us are working on our guts, far fewer have the guts (pun intended) to work on something a lot more difficult - changing our lives.

A New Opportunity to Start Fresh

The New Year provides a unique opportunity each year to start over and set a new course. Few take the challenge. Losing weight is far easier than re-setting your sails or trying to change your life for the better by undertaking a new business or challenge.

In one of my favorite books, The Traveler's Gift, Andy Andrews writes about a man who's down on his luck, gets into a car accident and loses his will to live - until he encounters some figures from history. Each figure gives him a bit of wisdom to confront his future.

One of the things he learns is that he will not let history control his destiny. He's taught that each of us has chosen the pathway to our destination and the responsibility for that is ours to own. While we can't change the past, the good news is that we can change the future by making good decisions and then taking action.

Focus on the Mental Challenges and Confront Your Future

And that brings me to my central point. Far too many of us focus on the physical and not the mental part of our challenges. We can lose weight, grow more hair (well, some of us can), whiten our teeth, but we often fail to change our lives.

We remain prisoners of our current situation and fail to change the course of the life we want most to change; our own. We wish we had more money or a different set of friends or drove a better car, etc. but seldom do we take the action that is required to change those things. We are held back by the fear and humiliation of failure, rather than the almost unlimited possibilities the future presents us.

Start Small, But Start Somewhere!!

I know what you are saying. "Scott, I have kids, a mortgage, bills to pay, I can't afford to do anything. I can't take a risk." I'm not saying give up your job, or tell the boss to, as Johnny Paycheck once sang, "Take This Job and Shove It." I am saying to begin your change by working on the edges.

By taking that TV time at night, or get up earlier or take some time on the weekends to work on a new business. Start small, with a small investment until you know it works, then invest more time and money. I didn't say this was going to be easy but nothing good in life ever is, unless you win the lottery or inherit your money.

The Difference Between Having a Vision and Not Having One

I used to manage a large group of mostly lower middle class working people. They were great people but almost all of them lacked a couple crucial tools; a belief in themselves; and a vision of their future. They didn't think they could change their futures, so they simply never tried.

Yes, they wanted better lives, but they just never went that extra mile to grab it. They didn't have bank accounts and were, for the most part, content to settle for the job they had. They never dreamed big or took the action to set up something for themselves. They never looked beyond the next week.

I know what you're thinking. "Great, Scott, but you've never been poor." Wrong. In my first TV job out of college I made minimum wage and because I was salaried, worked 50 hours a week. The people at McDonalds were actually making more than I was. But, I had a vision for my future. And I made it there.

I still have a vision for my future today. It's changed over the years as my hopes and dreams have, but I think about it every single day. I think about where I want to be, where I want to live, what I will do and envision my future. And, I have a way to get me there.

So this coming year, think larger than yourself. Think how you can get there. What steps do you need to take and then TAKE ACTION. Good luck.

Myth Busted: Why New Year's Resolutions Don't Work and What To Do About It

Let's face it. New Year's Resolutions are bogus.

Who invented these instruments of torture anyway? Was it some evil Cardinal in the Catholic Church who used the practice of writing down the faults we wish to change as a method of selling more indulgences to the peasants?

Okay, now I'm making crazy talk. Of course there's nothing sinister about self-examination and setting up intentions to release unwanted baggage in our lives. But why do so many people feel cranky and depressed at the very thought of this tradition?
Here's the reason: New Year's resolutions usually deal with surface behaviors and fail to dig down around the roots of our dissatisfaction.
Statistics:
According to Steven Shapiro in an article about his book, Goal Free Living.
  • 45% of Americans usually set New Year's Resolutions; 17% infrequently set resolutions; 38% absolutely never set resolutions.
  • Only 8% of people are always successful in achieving their resolutions. 19% achieve their resolutions every other year. 49% have infrequent success. 24% (one in four people) NEVER succeed and have failed on every resolution every year. That means that 3 out of 4 people almost never succeed.
  • The less happy you are, the more likely you are to set New Year's Resolutions. This is especially true for those who set money-related resolutions: 41% are not happy, 34% are moderately happy, and 25% are happy.
In other words, when we sit down for a quick bout of introspection and write out a list of things we'd like to improve about our lives, we rarely get to the underlying issues...the unconscious impulses which cause us to overeat, waste time or procrastinate writing that book.

So, we have evidence which proves that a majority of people set resolutions and almost NONE of them follow through. But, there is a percentage of us out there who seemed to have figured out the magic formula. Some walk among us who are smart enough, disciplined enough and downright awesome enough to bust out of inertia and make real change. Are they living, breathing superheroes, or what?

The answer is: "... or what". The key to making resolutions stick isn't superior IQ, Spartan-worthy willpower or some mystical X-factor.

What I've discovered in long study of human behavior and self observation is that we only shed un-beneficial habits and replace them with desirable new patterns when we get in touch with our core values.

I cringe to type that "values" word. It is so overused that my eyes slide right over its worn out surface. Who needs more cliches? But the fact remains that we do have powerful, invisible principles which represent the best qualities of life (freedom, health, love, and creativity to name just a few). We also wrestle with unseen forces rising from the unconscious which sabotage our ability to live in line with the higher values.

Here's a simple exercise:
  1. Find a quiet place. Bring along a pen and notebook.
  2. Take inventory. Run your mental binoculars over the landscape of your life. Allow yourself to simply observe how you are showing up in the world at this present time.
  3. Note the areas which provide peace and comfort. Everyone (even those who feel like their lives are a total mess) has corners of themselves which are in order and for which they can be grateful. Are you good about balancing your checkbook or being kind to stray animals or expressing love to your children? Write that down. It's important to recognize and celebrate everything that is working already in life.
  4. Now list the hotspots which smolder away like volcanoes waiting to erupt. This is the stuff that wakes you up at 3 a.m. with knots in your stomach and fills you with fear, self-disgust and anger. Do you struggle with some addiction or have a horribly tangled relationship or can't seem to gather the strength to get out of a career rut? Write about these as honestly as you can. Don't worry about figuring out what to do with them at this point. The act of acknowledging them is powerful by itself.
  5. Next, look at the lower-grade frustrations. Start these sentences with "I want to...". I want to lose weight, stop smoking, finally quit procrastinating and write that book, get the finances in order, go back to school, etc.
Number 5 is where most people start with their New Year's Resolutions, and (because they haven't stepped back to see the whole picture) it is also why they inevitably chuck those good intentions out the window after just a few days or weeks.

These important-but-less-powerful desires get crushed in the war between the greater forces in our lives. However, these are also wonderful clues. We can follow them and discover where they are attached to what we truly wish to manifest.

Now that we have a bird's-eye map, it is time to identify a few simple values. These are the brightest stars in our sky...the inner compass by which we can chart new paths. They represent what we desire most, but they are also silent. We have to spend time and pay attention or the guidance they offer is lost in the clamor and stress of daily life.

Go back to your notebook now and write just a few words. These are non-specific principles but you will know they are your highest values because you will feel them resonate like an inner gong. Famous psychologist, Abraham Maslow, would call them meta-needs and meta-motivations. They transcend the basic drives to maintain physical or social life.

Here are a few to consider:
  • Freedom
  • Creativity
  • Wholeness (whole-person health: body, mind, and spirit)
Do you have your own to add? I invite you to pick the one which strikes the deepest chord and do a short journey of imagination.

Let's say that you've chosen "freedom".

Visualization:
With your eyes closed, allow your mind to paint images of freedom.
  • What does a perfectly free you do?
  • Where are you living?
  • What are you doing for work?
  • What clothes are you wearing?
  • How does your body appear?
  • What does this perfectly free creature no longer do?
Spend time with this process and you'll re-discover an amazing ability to dream and imagine. Remember how you were as a child and anything seemed possible? Three Ways to Stop Over-Analyzing and Start Doing

When I revamped my website and had a blog installed on it I promised myself I would actually use it. So here I sit 6 months later and I am determined to keep my promise! I have been so hell-bent on writing something valuable and earth shattering that I've been completely paralyzed and haven't written anything at all.

Yet I have plenty of clients and peers who value my input and insight, so what's my problem? I'm glad you asked because it might be familiar to you too!

I suffer from a disorder known as "Impossibly High Expectations Leading to Complete Inaction" Disorder. The bad news is it's very common. The good news is it's completely treatable. I'm expecting to make a full recovery and I'd like to help you if you're suffering from it too.

How do you recognize this ailment? You might be afflicted with this disorder if you:

  • Consistently beat yourself up about something you know you "should" be doing
  • Find you regularly procrastinate on a particular activity
  • Wish you could "just do it"
  • Understand the benefit of doing it, but you just can't bring yourself to execute
  • Feel really relieved and proud of yourself when you actually do it

No matter how much the rational part of me knows that I have to share my information, tips, philosophies, and tools with you, the control freak in me always struggles with letting go of the idea that it has to be perfect before I can put it out there. This unrealistic expectation has kept me from sharing stories, ideas and solutions and it's caused me to miss opportunities to:
  • Build relationships with prospects who need my help
  • Appeal to potential referral sources
  • Grow my business and make more money
If you are among the afflicted, then it's having the same effects on you!

So what can you do to combat this crippling ailment? As a control freak "in recovery" I can tell you that there are three things you can do right now:

Shift your mindset

Recognize that it's holding you back in your business (and probably in other areas of your life). Failing to take action always results in missed opportunities. Comfort yourself with the knowledge that anything you do is temporary. It can be changed, improved, tweaked or replaced at any time. It's for now, not for-ever and as I've learned working with Christian Mickelson (ultra successful business coach), "done is better than perfect".

Recognize why you're REALLY procrastinating

I always procrastinate when it comes to writing. I get paralyzed at the idea of writing articles, stressing over what will be interesting, helpful and supportive of the growth of your business. I'm a pretty decent writer, so it's not the activity of writing that's the problem, it's knowing what to say. It's the same thing with Social Media.

I get paralyzed thinking that I have to come up with the "perfect" thing to say. I stress over the length and whether it's juicy, helpful, and valuable enough. Then frustrated I move on to something else. Recently it occurred to me that every day I hear from my clients what you're facing and what you need support with, why not use that? Light bulb moment! So I've started keeping notes and using them in short bursts (like this one!). So, ask yourself what you're putting off and WHY.

Get some support!

Every day, I look at my "to do" list and I realize that some of the things that I am putting off are things that I struggle with (anything technology related) or don't like. If you feel like you can't afford to hire someone to do it for you, then get creative. Find someone who is looking for extra money and ask them if they're interested in doing some projects for you. Barter with someone who knows how to do something you don't.

I was bartering my coaching services with a friend who does massage and bodywork. Ask a friend! I was looking for a title for this article and I emailed it to my friend, she gave me some title suggestions, editing suggestions and she doesn't know it yet, but I'm going to ask her to post it for me too!

If you are truly committed to growing your business, serving your clients and sharing your gifts then you will do whatever it takes. What are you prepared to do?

Make an Inventory of What Matters to You

As time passes, we humans tend to hoard everything. Hands up, if your garage no longer holds a car. Smile if you've ever added on a room to your home that now is simply more storage. Do you have every National Geographic you've ever received? Do you, like my mother, have a suitcase full of photos that didn't make the cut into an album?

It's easy to laugh and see the impact of hoarding when it regards physical objects. It isn't as easy to look at when we expand hoarding to include habits and activities that no longer serve a constructive purpose. So what really matters to you?

And why does it matter? What parts of your life should you keep? Which should you disregard? This article will focus on the non tangibles. You and your garage can work out your differences later.

Schedule a two hour quiet block of time. Get a notebook or pad and a pen. Have a small snack and something you like to drink with you. Maybe turn on some soothing instrumental music.

For the first few minutes of your session with yourself, take a couple of deep breaths. Allow yourself to relax. You've given yourself two hours, plenty of time for this exercise. You don't have to feel rushed or guilty.

At the top of six consecutive pages (more if you think of other groups) place a word. On the first place: spiritual, the second: mental, then: emotional, physical, financial and social on the remaining four pages.

Now, beginning with the first page, spiritual, write down your thoughts and feelings about what spiritual means to you. List what you think and feel. No one else will see these pages unless you show them, so write to and for yourself, not someone else. Follow this procedure for each of the six words, on their respective pages.

Next, go back to each page and write down any habits, routines, activities or hard core beliefs you have about each topic. For spiritual, consider your concept of the reality and existence of God (or non existence, too). For mental, include your thought process, how you make decisions, and how logical you feel you are.

Emotional can include your ideas on feelings, sensitivity, caring, self concept. Physical topics are overall health, diet, exercise, heredity. Financial would cover anything that includes money considerations: bills, savings, donations, salary and investments. Social involves interactions with others: family, friends, co-workers and humanity in general.

Finally, for each idea and item you've listed on each page ask yourself the following questions. Why do I continue to believe or do this? Is it functional? Does it reflect what I actually believe or is it the result of my unquestioned acceptance of something my parents, teachers, or others have told me?

Is it a good habit or belief by my definition? Is it fair to everyone it could affect? Is it healthy and growth oriented and expansive? Or, is it small minded and exclusionary? Should I continue to believe and act this way? What would happen if I no longer did this activity or held this belief?

After you have completed this exercise, you should discover at least a few notions and habits that no longer serve a valid purpose for you. Consider dropping them from your life immediately. For those that you might have forgotten about or gotten out of the positive habit of having in your life, commit to reintroducing those back into your routine.

Repeat this process twice per year. If you are a healthy growing person, you will need to revise and refine what you believe and do. This process will help.

Your strategic plan must be a set of crystal clear instructions on how to convert your dreams into reality. Unless you have the actual three digit sequence of numbers available, you will struggle for a long time before you finally manage to open the lock.

The same is true about your life, if you continue to present your mind with vague instructions and too many possible options; you will struggle to find the correct process or combination to succeed. A properly designed strategic plan will provide your mind with specific instructions, which will keep you moving in the direction of the success you desire.

The best analogy for understanding your strategic plan for success is to equate it to preparing for a cross country trip. When planning for any long distance trip you would need to consider the following:

Timeline

No trip is possible unless you have a clear idea about how far you will need to travel in total and how long it will take you to drive the entire distance. Secondly you will need to decide how far you will travel and how much time you will spend driving each day.

The same principal holds true for designing your strategic plan, you must have a clear idea about exactly what you want to achieve and then you must turn this into something measurable. As soon as you have a measurable, quantifiable goal, you are able to break this back into a daily target. This daily target allows you to measure your progress daily, weekly and monthly, to ensure that the actions you are taking are delivering the desired results.

Mapping your Route

When embarking on your cross country road trip, there are thousands of options or routes available for you to follow as you travel towards your destination. Unless you clarify the direction you want to travel each day; you will never reach your destination as planned.

The same is true for your strategic plan, you must map out exactly what you want, knowing with absolute clarity what you will achieve each day, including various milestones or intermediate destinations along the way.

Who do you need to travel with you?

Any long trip requires some assistance from other people. Do you need someone to help with the driving or do you need an expert tour guide to make the journey more informative and enjoyable?

Your strategic plan is the same; it needs to consider all the people that you will need, as you travel on your success journey, people that could assist you, especially people that could help you in areas where you have weaknesses. You strategic plan must include all the people that could assist you to accomplish your dreams and goals.

What research do you need to do?

Before embarking on any long distance journey, you will need to research the distance between towns, how far the various refuelling stations are apart, does the car need special fuel and is that specific grade of fuel available at the various destinations etc.

No strategic plan can ever work, unless you research all the additional information you may need to gather and document, so that you can achieve your strategic plan. The more time you invest into research today, the more time you will save later by reducing time wasted on managing unforeseen challenges

Resources

No road trip could ever be a success, unless you made sure that you had all the resources needed, Map, money, food, appropriate clothing and everything you will need from the moment you leave your driveway until you reach your destination.

The same holds true for your strategic plan, explore and discover all the possible resources you will need between today and the accomplishment of your big hairy audacious goal.

What training do you require?

Your road trip might require you to drive through some dangerous terrain, like snow or ice. Do you require any special training to ensure you can navigate this safely?

Your strategic plan must include all the possible training you will need to help you improve you skills and abilities. You can never achieve your goals if you lack the necessary skills, knowledge and abilities necessary to succeed. Build a complete self-development program into your strategic plan and ensure that you acquire the skills, abilities and knowledge needed to realise all your dreams.

Creating your strategic plan is crucial to your success, but when you apply the simple process as described above, using the analogy of a road trip to help you build your plan, you are able to turn this crucial process into a simple yet effective document for success.

Reflect in Order to Plan

December is the perfect time to look back at a year that's almost over, and look forward to what we intend to accomplish in the year ahead. Before we ring in the new year, let's take time to do a little "reflective thinking" on the year that will soon be history.

While we don't want to linger in the past, it's always beneficial to learn from it. Every success and every failure teach a lesson. Success is seldom permanent. It's a moving target that can prove elusive. Failure isn't fatal - just painful. If we're smart, we learn from both.

Here are some questions about 2011 you can use to reflect on. Next week, I'll send you a series of questions you can noodle on as you prepare for the year ahead.

What was your biggest success?
What was the best decision you made?
What was the most important lesson you learned?
What is your biggest piece of unfinished business?
What were you most happy about completing?
What was the biggest risk you took?
What was the biggest surprise?
Who were the three people who had the greatest impact on your life?
What important relationship improved the most?
What one word best sums up and describes the year's experience?

Notice how these questions are framed. The focus is positive. Your answers to these important questions Will set the stage for another series of questions regarding your plans for the year ahead.

Peter Drucker said: "The only way to get the future you want is to create it." While we may not have the ability to "control" our future - we do have the ability to plan for the year we want to have.

Here are questions that may help you do just that.

What successes are you looking for next year?
How can you make better decisions?
What do you need to learn or relearn?
Which piece of unfinished business needs your attention?
What project needs to be completed?
What risk(s) do you need to take?
What surprise would you like to experience?
Name three people you want to positively impact.
What important relationship needs to be improved?
What one word best sums up the experience you want to have?

Each of the answers to these questions will require action on your part. It would be a big mistake to leave this as just a plan. After you answer these questions, list a "first action step" beside the answer to get you moving to make something happen.

Success comes from doing, not from dreaming. We're the only species on the planet that has the ability to design the future we want to have. Take advantage!

The Happiest People Don't Have The Best of Everything - They Just Make The Best of Everything!

In my early days in direct sales I was young and impressionable and wanted to be just like my sales manager. I wanted his designer suits, his luxury car, his fancy watch, the big villa he lived in ... and I spent all my time focusing on getting those things.

Twelve months later I was earning a good living in sales but I hadn't earned anywhere near enough money yet to buy the things he had. I had a nice little house a cheap reliable car and lived with a nice country girl who loved the simple things in life and wasn't at all impressed by my flash sales manager friend.

One night on a boy's night out we were just chilling and chatting and my sales manager started opening up to me and confessing how he had always envied me!

I was shocked to say the least. Here was this guy who I had set my goals around opening up his heart to me! And on top of it he envied me!

After over an hour of him talking and me listening it turned out that he hated wearing designer suits, his watch was a gift, his luxury car and big villa were rented and his wife was just about to leave him because she couldn't stand the person he had become. He had made himself ill from the constant pressure of always wanting bigger and better things!

In his eyes I had the perfect life and he would have swapped it for his life any day of the week!

It brought me right down to earth!

The image I had built up in mind about what his life was like was the complete opposite to the reality. I was so far of track it pulled me up dead and I realized that the only thing I can be 100% sure of is what I know to be true. And the only thing I really know to be 100% true, is my life!

Not anybody else's life.

My Life!

Ever since that night I have learned to focus on my own life and improve what I already have instead of focusing on what I think other people have.

"The happiest people in the world don't have the best of everything ... they just make the best of everything!"

Remember. It's your life not anybody else's!

You will only experience true wealth and happiness when you learn that life is about living not about having!

While he has been in the news more for his personal indiscretions than his accomplishments over the past few years, it should never be forgotten that he is one of the most successful athletes of our time. His success is attributed in part to his father introducing him to the sport at an early age and encouraging him.

Woods grew up knowing he was destined to be great, and therefore he achieved this greatness easily. His success has crossed over from golf into advertising, where he earns much of his multi-million dollar income each year.

Warren Buffet

This legendary investor is the poster child for the laws of attraction movement. He has earned billions over the course of his lifetime and shared much of his earnings through his philanthropy. He grew up in a household that encouraged his interest in making money.

Even as a child he knew that he wanted to make money and found that it came exceptionally easy to him. Growing up in an environment that encourages success is one way that many people learn how to be successful.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah is arguably the most successful woman in America. Her talk show was the most popular of its type from 1986 until it went off the air in 2011. She was also ranked as the richest African American of the 20th century. Her childhood was rough, as the child of a poor, single mother.

However, despite her rough start she never stopped believing in herself and rose above her simple upbringing. Though she faced struggles, she never let anyone get her down, which is one of the hallmarks of a truly successful person.

Garth Brooks

One of the biggest entertainers of the 20th century, Garth Brooks has a mind for business and a grasp on his own desire for success. This is unsurpassed by others in his field. He grew up in a very supportive family and focused on athletics and academics as a child, only becoming serious about music as he got older.

His degree in advertising helped him creatively market himself so that he stands apart from his contemporaries. He didn't start out the success he is today, but he always knew he would be successful and worked towards that goal.

Donald Trump

Donald Trump is a famed businessman who has grown an empire that extends around the world. While his path has not always been simple, he has a confidence in himself that is unsurpassed. He has interests in business, real estate and television. His own belief in his abilities to be successful have driven him to keep pressing on, despite the odds stacked against him.

He has been rewarded with continued success in nearly everything he attempts. He is considering an involvement in politics, and if he continues his own positive thinking, he will surely experience success with this as well.

As one of the most successful authors in history, she became so because of her own belief in the story she had to tell. She was on social security, barely getting by when she wrote the first Harry Potter book. Before her success she was very down on herself, but through the encouragement of friends and the pride she felt in the book she had written, she learned to believe in herself.

Only after she learned how to imagine herself successful, did she achieve success. She faced a dozen rejections before she found a publisher for her first novel. Since then she has sold millions of copies of her books and spawned a hugely successful movie franchise.

Internal and External Strategies for Creating the Life You Want

The Large and Small of Goal Setting

A client recently wrote to me, "It feels good to have little successes." I reflected on that, because a lot of times in personal growth we speak about thinking big. We speak about getting out of the box, and setting challenging goals that will move us out of our past conditioning to live a commitment driven life.

And obviously, there's a place for that, I would not discount or discourage the quantum leap approach in goal setting. At the same time, there is a place in personal development and goal-setting for thinking small. Small, in the sense of breaking down our goals into manageable and practical steps. In this way we give ourselves an experience of success.

Small Successes Pave the Way for Greater Achievement

Let's say my goal is to get up at 4 am and do meditation every day. I may say "Yes! Every day, for the rest of my life, I am going to get up at 4 AM and do meditation!" Now let's say the reality is, it has been more than twenty-five years since I woke up before 8 AM. So perhaps I will wake up at 4 AM for a day, or even a week, but then due to past conditioning, I may miss a day.

Missing one day can lead to missing two, and even a whole week. I may feel that I made a commitment to myself, and I didn't keep it, which can lead to a downward cycle of discouragement. However, what if I say, "I am going to get up at 6 AM at least two days per week for the next month to do my meditation."

I may try to wake up early on the other days, but I am rock solid committed to these two days. At the end of the month, I can feel good about myself for having achieved my goal, and then I can build on that success to eventually achieve those greater, larger goals.

Clear Intention is the Key

We assert that, apart from any external goal-attainment strategies, to achieve a result, small or large, we must have clear intention. The power of intention will always actualize itself. "Clear" intention means consciously applying the power of intention. Living from clear intention, no material impediment can prevent this actualization.

Therefore, even if our conditioning or other circumstances present apparent challenges, we can always prevail. With clear intention, we find a way to concretize the result. Implicit in the principle of clear intention is the idea that, "I might not know how it's going to happen, but I'm certain it's going to happen."

A client described how for years she had been trying to sell a piece of land. When she would get close to a sale, something invariably would come in to block it. This became a source of anxiety for her. Once she absorbed the principle of clear intention, and understood that this consciousness comes from the soul, she felt freed from her anxiousness. Almost immediately, her land sold.

Whatever our most cherished vision may be, let us begin it now, with clear intention, and consciousness in the goal.

Appreciate and Use Your Creativity

I have recently found myself exploring the subject of Creativity and Imagination. Something that whether we realize it or not, we all have. I find it interesting that many of us if asked say that we are not creative.

We have the misperception that to be creative we have to be artistic in some way. Being creative is often linked to activities such as painting, drawing, writing and craftwork but not much else.

We seem to forget that there are many other ways of being creative including cooking, decorating our living spaces and offices, finding new ways to solve problems or finding different ways of doing the same old thing.

Imagination goes hand in hand with creativity and is a real asset, but is often undervalued. Without imagination, the computer I am using to create this article would not have come into existence. Bill Gates would not have created Microsoft and Edison would not have given us electric light!

Unfortunately, as children our creativity is often stifled by our experiences at school as we are expected to fit into the education system whether the education system fits us or not. We are told that we have "too much imagination" which makes us feel that to be imaginative and creative is a bad thing.

Our ideas are pooh- poohed when they do not fit into the traditional way of thinking. So we learn not to voice our ideas or try to do things differently in fear of being humiliated.

Those of us who neglect our creativity restrict ourselves unnecessarily. Our lives are not complete. I believe stifling our creativity impacts on our mental and emotional health and can have severe physical ramifications to the most creative part of our body, our reproductive organs.

As Caroline Myss Ph.D. in her book Anatomy of the Spirit says "Blocking this energy can cause impotence, infertility, vaginal infections, endometriosis and depression." Now there is some food for thought!

We do not have to be a Bill Gates or Thomas Edison to be creative. We can just be ourselves. We all have the ability to use our imagination and creativity. When we have ideas even though they may seem a bit wacky, it is good think them through further rather than dismissing them out of hand. My suggestion is: discuss your ideas with someone you trust to see if they can be developed.

Let your Creativity shine, not just in your home life but in your work life too. Being creative can make a boring job more interesting. Showing your Boss your creativity forte could even get you a promotion. Or at least make your job more satisfying. So ignore the critics, get creating and enjoy the ride.
