How To Achieve Career Mastery

You have worked hard at mastering yourself - your habits, your outlook on life, your relationships and your finances. Now is the time to master the course of your career, as well.

You achieve career mastery when you can integrate your personal development and growth into your professional growth and development.

There are different elements for career mastery.

Becoming Proactive

The most important aspect of career mastery is going after what you want. This means identifying your goal and taking the necessary action towards it. It will not be easy, which is why you have avoided taking these steps in the past. Getting proactive about your career also means that you will regularly have to overcome barriers and limitations. You do not have to overcome everything at once; all that is required it consistent action

Networking

Obviously, you will need to interact with other people and build your treasury of valuable contacts. If you have not been very successful at this so far, you may have overlooked one very important aspect of connecting with others. You need to understand that to effectively connect with other people, you need to connect with yourself first. In other words, you have to gain a thorough understanding of who and what you are. Once you have this understanding, networking with the right people becomes effortless.

Becoming Informed

Have you put all your time and effort into staying informed about issues related to your current profession - to the exclusion of everything else? This is a mistake, because it closes you off from other career options. Career mastery may involve changing the current storyline altogether. Inform yourself about other professions that may interest you, as well.

Knowing Your True Potential

It is important to know your potential and your strengths and weaknesses. This will allow you to focus on what is feasible and workable in your professional life, and save you the wasted time and effort of Quixotic endeavors.

These principles hold true whether you are working for an organization or self-employed. The idea is to take charge of your career, no matter how and where you are placed right now. Remember that the onus of career mastery is completely on you - the world does not owe you better opportunities. Other people will not promote you in your professional life - only you can do that. Throughout your professional life, you will have to accept total responsibility for right and wrong career decisions.

Here is a fundamental standard to guide you in whatever you do from now on - you will only succeed at something if you love doing it. Successful people do not create and build their careers or businesses for economic reasons alone. They succeed because they love their company, their jobs or their business.

Probably the biggest challenge here lies in knowing what you really love to do. It is difficult to find and attain your true potential when you choose to act solely on the basis of logic and common sense. Peter Senge, the American scientist and director of the Center for Organizational Learning at the MIT Sloan School of Management, has correctly pointed out that adults have little sense of real vision. Most of us have goals and objectives in our lives, but having a vision and following up on that vision is a very different ballgame.

Changing or shifting your career as a professional or an entrepreneur is not easy. You have to master yourself first before you start changing. Career mastery begins with self-mastery. Self-mastery, in turn, begins with uncompromising self-examination, facing up to the immutable truths of one's abilities and potential, and following through with determined, concerted action.

Wellness - What Is Wellness?

Is there a definition of wellness? The word wellness is in the news, social media, blogs, books on billboards, and in conversations. Many people reference a 'state of well-being,' which is vague to say the least.

The vague definition of well-being and wellness implies 'a state of acceptance or satisfaction with one's condition or conditioning - i.e. What one accepts, tolerates, ignores, pretends, copes or struggles with.

Wellness has become the latest buzz word with little understanding of what wellness is or how to create it.

Interestingly, the Federal Drug Administration, American Medical Association or American Pharmaceutical Association has failed to set-forth a definition of wellness. There is, however, a set of criteria and characteristics that is an accurate definition of people, who live their life unencumbered by sickness, disease, dysfunctions, chaos, distress, malaise, drama, or trauma.

Wellness is a natural state of being not an option to be decided by someone or a choice to be made only after the mind, body, spirit is in extreme decay. Wellness is your birth right; life purpose and a way of life. You were designed to be healthy.

Every aspect of human existence - mind, body and spirit has a significant role in keeping your human existence healthy - provided the system has adequate emotional, physical and spiritual sustenance.

Wellness is a multidimensional state of being describing the existence of positive health as exemplified by quality of life and a sense of wholeness. Wellness is the active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward an empowered and successful life. Dimensions of wellness includes: Emotional; Environmental; Financial; Intellectual; Mental; Occupational; Social; Spiritual; and Physical.

The concise definition of wellness is:

- Knowing my needs and working to achieve them.
- Expressing and communicating feelings; including what I am experiencing.
- Acting assertively - devoid of passivity and aggression.
- Adhering to a healthy food plan (nutrition) for my blood type - avoid junk food, GMO, pharmaceuticals and medical pills, potions and having body parts cut out.
- Attending to my physical health daily - natural foods, avoid processed food, natural remedies - discovering the root cause and eliminating it; rather than treating symptoms.
- Maintaining body weight within BMI for my height and body frame.
- Engaging in adequate exercise and creating physical stamina.
- Engage in meaningful activities and projects that reflect my most important values.
- Loving myself unconditionally first and foremost.
- Loving others unconditionally.
- Creating and cultivating close relationships with family and friends.
- Responding to challenges in life as opportunities to grow emotionally and spiritually - rather than seeing only problems and travail.
- Creating my ideal life rather than reacting to 'what happens - i.e. avoid believing 'shit happens.'
- Seeing everything as an opportunity to learn and grow.
- Trusting myself as my personal resource and my greatest strength for living and growing.
- Experiencing myself and others moment to moment - avoid worrying ahead or lamenting the past.

Wellness is the state of being fully alive with a sense of attainment; responding appropriately instead of reacting to life and circumstances. Wellness is the act of remaining calm and focused while working things out with unconditional love.

Ultimately your personal character; personal strength and courage will evolve. To attain wellness requires you to make healthy choices in nutrition, social contact, work, exercise, leisure and relationships. I wish you well on your journey.

Simple Goal Setting - One Step At A Time

With the end of the year approaching, now is a good time to think about your goals for the next year, but you can do this any time you need to get focused. First take a look at what you've achieved so far. What did you learn, what were the highs and lows?

Then think about what you would like to achieve in the coming year. Do you have one BIG goal that you would like to achieve, or perhaps three or four goals that you would like to complete next year - and no, I don't mean those New Year 'resolutions' which rapidly fade from view by about the middle of February.

I mean some specific goals that you really want to achieve next year and to which you're going to make a commitment to yourself, and preferably someone else, that you're going to do them. Perhaps you do want to give up smoking, lose weight or get fit - that's fine but give it some purpose and put a plan in place so that you can actually achieve it.

Here are a few key steps to enable you to turn your goals into reality:

  • What is your big goal or dream? Whether it's a small hill or high mountain - what do you want to change in your life? Where do you want to be - physically, mentally or emotionally - by the end of the coming year? Write your goals down and pin them up where you'll see them every day.
  • Think about what will it look and feel like to have achieved your goal. Why do you want it - what will it mean to you? How much do you really want it and what impact will it have on your life? This step is important, as if you have a solid underlying reason for doing something and can see the benefits of doing it, you're more likely to achieve it.
To make more sense of your goals, make them S.M.A.R.T. goals. If you haven't seen this acronym before - it means Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.

Specific - don't set a goal to 'lose weight' - set a goal to lose 10lbs or if you want to get fit - set a goal to walk or run a certain distance without getting out of breath or complete a sponsored walk or run a 10k.

Measurable - give your goal a series of targets that you can measure as you go - 10lbs so you can check off each pound on a weekly basis, or if you want to save or earn a specific amount of money, or rate your goal on a scale of 1-10.

Achievable - don't decide to climb Everest if it's so way beyond your skills and ability that you're just setting yourself up for failure. Think about the time, resources and skills available. Stretch yourself but be realistic, otherwise you won't commit to it.

Relevant/Realistic - make sure your goals fit with your bigger vision for your life or business. Don't make them so easy that they're not a challenge but not so difficult that you'll never achieve them either.

Time-bound - set a date for when you plan to achieve this goal. This stops it drifting off into something indefinite and gives you a target for which to aim.

It also helps if you make yourself accountable to someone. If you tell someone else about your goal, not only will this keep you motivated but they can help to keep you on track. This could be your partner, friend, colleague, a mentor or a coach.

Now break up your big goal into smaller, more achievable steps. What information or skills do you need? Perhaps there are some additional training courses on to which you need to book yourself. Who could you talk to; what do you need to know first?

What do you need to do within the next 6-12 months towards your goal? Put a plan in place with smaller goals, actions and stepping stones along the way to help you achieve it.

  • What do you need to do this month?
  • What can you do this week?
  • What can you do today?
Now that you've set your goals, go do it!

The Practical Way to Meet Your Goals

What do you do to meet your goals?

Try to imagine asking this question randomly and you'll probably get a variety of reactions. Anyone who's ever wanted more will have probably laid out a plan to achieve what they want. Personal goals are of course closest to the heart of any dreamer or aspiring achiever.

For me my early goal was to achieve everything possible as a rugby player. Represent my country, captain my country and also tour with the British and Irish Lions, which fortunately I was able to realize during my career.

Now my goal is to empower as many people as possible from all around the world to reach their true potential and create for themselves a more successful, happy and abundant life.

For every goal I personally set myself, I create a step by step plan that ensures I continually move closer and closer to achieving it.

But the question is does anyone who aspires or sets a goal for themselves, lay out a plan to achieve their goal?

Systematic approaches to attain set goals are not very common with personal goals, since this will most likely entail the person's vision and technique.

There are goals that may or may not need the involvement of another person or entity. Some will need the assistance and monitoring of others for guaranteed results.

Objectify Your Goals

Through evolution and modernization, goals have changed from every stage of life. The goal to finish school, to be in a certain weight, to own a property or house at a certain age, and the goal to settle down and eventually retire comfortably in the future are some of the more common goals that a person might have. Or are they?

To some if not most, these things which were enumerated won't even count as goals, but phases that have become standard in living. Treating these as goals, rather than what's next in your life, will give more value to these events.

In order to meet your goals, you will need an objectification, even on those that may hold value to your existence. In fact being objective about a goal just might be the biggest step you'll take towards meeting it.

Recording Your Achievement

Goals in life for some are at times held with emotion. Being able to step back, and look at a goal gives a person more control over it. Losing weight, buying a car, getting an MBA or doctorate, even having a baby can all be better achieved as a goal if it's documented to achievement.

Taking note of the steps you've taken, effort you've exerted and progress you've made, no matter how big or small help meet your goals in life.

This will also give you an account of things that you may later review on should there be any fall back.

Commitment to Achieving

Commitment should always be present for you to meet your goals. You may lose everything else, but if you remain committed to your goal, it will still happen. Everything else that you may add in to achieve your goal is an accessory or proof to your commitment.

Strategies like, taking personal note, an account of steps taken, and endorsement or monitoring with another person, are all part of the commitment to achieve it.

Key performance indicators or progress rate, that's readily visible, will be a big help to meet your goals.

Being able to look at the numbers on your bank account, for the money you're saving for that new car may add more motivation to you.

Someone who's cutting down on weight might find it even more inspiring to look at the new weight after losing some pounds, plastered on his wall.

Once you meet your goals, this can propel you to greater self-worth and bigger achievements, with the right attitude and commitment.

Having goals is a vital component to achieving success.It gives you a sense purpose and drive to create a better life for yourself. Start applying proven strategies to ensure you meet your goals and create for yourself a more successful and fulfilling life.

Is This the Year To Kick Guilt Ridden New Years Resolutions to the Curb?

Even with the best of intentions, New Year's resolutions come and go.

For many, they end up causing more stress and guilt than they're worth. Instead, read on to learn about a simple and easy way to keep yourself focused throughout the entire year.

In general, themes are uplifting.

Have you ever gone to a birthday party and asked people to bring gifts with a "garden" or "fishing" theme? I know someone who asked people to bring something they made themselves! What a wonderful idea!

Well a personal theme can help you get what you want out of life, too. Anyone who is evolving can be helped considerably by having a terrific support network. Well, themes are part of a person's support structure, the part that comes from the inside.

When you create a theme for the year (or month, or quarter), you will be automatically pushed forward toward your goals. Why? Your theme helps keep you focused by providing you with a starting point during your decision making process. So important are themes, that creating one is the first of 24 steps towards creating a strong "Personal Foundation," a personal development program that many coaches offer their clients.

Themes can be a few words or even one word to describe what you want to accomplish for the year. What's important is, once created, it inspires you into action and is easy to remember. I recommend that you write your theme on index cards and place them strategically around your home and office. A theme located near your mirror or designed on a poster for your office is a quick reminder of what you want to manifest.

Some examples of personal themes are...

  • Forgive.
  • I'm worth it!
  • Financial freedom here I come!
  • Move'n on.
  • Have fun, fun, fun in all I do!
  • Put down roots.
  • Be present, present be.
  • Be a successful me.
  • Big leaps of faith
  • Action, action, action
  • Enjoying all I have
Examples of business themes are...

  • Do it or dump it.
  • Time is valuable.
  • Prosperity first.
  • Move'n on.
  • No more Lone Ranger.
  • Ask for help, even when you don't need it.
  • Free is not me.
Some options for theme creating are:

  • Your personal yearly theme.
  • A family theme.
  • A theme for a project.
  • A theme for a party or event.
  • An Office theme.
  • Your theme ideas here.
Today, right this moment, is a great time to create your yearly themes for the next 12 months.

Commit To Your Goals - And Achieve Them!

A saying goes like this - "If you want; and you can't, it simply means you have not tried enough." In other words, if you really want something and are prepared to work to achieve the same, there is nothing that can stop you.

You want to achieve something, have made your goals and are even working in that direction. Now, can there be anything to stop you from achieving what you aim for? Certainly not, if and only if you are really committed to the same. Yes! It is the commitment that decides the end result. You can not work half-heartedly to achieve something you have given your heart to.

Why not have a quick check if you are really committed to your goals:
  • Have you penned down your commitment? There are numerous cases to stress on the importance of written down goals. Writing down your goals brings more clarity, makes them more specific and reinforces your personal ownership of the goals. It acts as a constant reminder. Reading your written goals often keeps you focused and encourages you to act decisively.
  • To whom is your commitment? It is important to clarify to yourself that the commitment is made to yourself. If you want something for others or because others will appreciate it, you have a perfect recipe for failure. Remember, nobody works for anyone else. Even employees can achieve organizational goals only when they personalize and own them. So, make the commitment not to others, but to yourself.
  • Have you committed time to it? Time, as you know, is a priceless, highly valuable commodity. If a goal is dear to you, you must set aside a timeslot devoted to it. It may be daily, weekly, whatever you have decided after carefully considering the requirements. Great goals can not be achieved by stray activities here and there in your 'spare time'. Quality goals need quality time. You have to plan for it.
  • Have you committed required investment? While there is no idea just throwing money away, the fact remains that nothing comes free. Depending on the nature of your goals and your own competency and skills, you may need some resources like books, products, equipment or coaching. Certainly purchasing any amount of these resources will not deliver the desired, it is equally important to have some minimum investment. If you want everything without making any investment, the results may be disappointing only. Simplest example can be when you want to become a good electrician; but are not willing to buy an electric tester.
  • Are you motivated enough to ACT? Are you spending too much time planning? Are you bogged down by sheer size of the project before you? While it is not a good idea to move ahead without proper planning, it may be worse if you continue planning and trying to make a perfect plan. The success mantra is to start moving. Aim for something practical, not perfect. And do you know the most auspicious time to take the first step? It is NOW.

The 5 Pillars of Human Excellence

I often wondered why so many people that seek to be perfect often end up not doing anything at all.

Perfection leads to procrastination. That's because, who can really be perfect? Excellence, on the other hand, anyone can do. Each person will have his or her standards of excellence. When you give something your best effort, then you are driving towards excellence. And remember this; excellence is about continuous improvement, not perfection.

I remember watching the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, NY and the Men's Ice Hockey match between the Mighty Soviets and the United States youngsters. Each team was fully engaged in the match and the winner went to the gold medal game.

There were mistakes made on both sides. When the famous Soviet goalie, Vladislav Tretiak, was pulled by the Soviet coach, after allowing two goals in the 1st period, it showed the focus was on perfection....not excellence. Again, mistakes happen.

While the USA coach, Herb Brooks, tended to be a perfectionist - the reality was he focused on excellence from his team. That came through by ever progressing challenges. So it was no wonder that despite in every game the US team had to come from behind in those Winter Games, they managed to keep focused on excellence and win. And all the way to the gold medal.

So what are the 5 pillars of human excellence? Well, here they are.

1. As I mentioned, one of the reasons that the 1980 USA Men's Olympic Hockey team was the gold medal was focus. Focus is the first pillar of human excellence. It's also one the main reasons why so many people today lack excellence in their lives. The lack of focus. And truth be told, we all have. I know that it's happened to me more often than not. This led to procrastination. It becomes much easier to stay focused when what you are focused on is aligned with your purpose and passion. It's also true when you add your personal beliefs and values to the mix.

2. The second pillar of human excellence is that of continuous improvement. It has been said that those that never improve will actually progress backwards. We see this with many people who graduate from college. Falsely believing that they have learned everything once they graduate. The truth is it's only a foundation to true learning. Excellence comes from growth and growth comes from continued challenges. NLP co-founder, John Grinder, described it as pushing past one's boundaries or walls.

3. The third pillar of excellence is that of resilience. The late Coach John Wooden described it this way, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." This is especially true of the person of excellence. Toughness through the hardest times and being able to bounce back from every failure is important.

4. The fourth pillar of excellence is that of confidence. Having confidence is important in that doing so will enable you to have the belief to take the necessary actions necessary in every endeavor. Believing that you can do will result in your doing it. That includes staying focused on your purpose and mission. And being able to instill the sense of excellence in others.

5. The fifth pillar of excellence is that of health and fitness. Without health and fitness, you won't have the stamina to be at your best self. Excellence requires this. Eating the right foods and nutrition will result in better thinking and the physical endurance for the other pillars of excellence. Physical fitness is important in making sure you have good blood flow for your brain as well as having a fully-functioning body. Sleep is also a key in health. Make sure you get plenty of it. Usually 7-8 hours per day.

The 1980 United States Men's Olympic Ice Hockey Team had all aspects of excellence. They were focused, continued to improve, showed resilience despite being down in every game, had confidence they could succeed and were physically fit as well as healthy to withstand the training and had endurance in each game.

You too, can develop excellence that fits you. Again, it is not about perfection. It's about giving your best effort towards what you want excellence in.

Excellence in not something that you can buy, you must earn it. It is not given to you. And it's not something that you have forever once you get it. By following the 5 pillars you will stay in excellence. It is a lifelong process.

Why Do I Need A Coach?

You don't! You can keep going the way you are and doing the things you are doing and expecting things to be different? But guess what? They won't be different. How are you going to create real success in all you do? Have you addressed these questions.

1. Is fear of failure holding you back from real success in all you do?
2. Are you holding back making decisions because you might be wrong?
3. Are you afraid of taking the risk because you might look bad? Or it might cost you a great deal.

Why not ask these questions in a much more positive manner - what if:

1. You took the risk and it worked out?
2. You failed and it gave you more confidence in trying again?
3. It didn't work, but led you to something even greater

As you begin your journey into the new year, there are 3 questions on the table that you need to address and 13 keys to addressing them.

1. Where are you going?
2. How are you going to get there?
3. When are you going to get started?

First one - where are you going?

1. Do you have a vision - do you know where you are headed?
2. How innovative are you in what you are doing? Are you doing everything from inside a box which limits your potential? Are you in the box?
3. How is your attitude? Do others want to be like you? Do others want to follow you? Or, do others avoid you because your attitude stinks?
4. How much courage do you have? Remember the opposite of courage is conformity.

Second - how are you going to get there?

5. Do you have a written plan that addresses and shows you how you are going to get to where you want to go. A written plan with written goals, measurements and someone to keep you accountable.
6. What have you learned from this year and the past? Positive and negative. Remember, if you don't do a lessons learned, you will keep making the same mistakes.
7. Do you have a servant attitude? How can I help you today?
8. How is your time management - not paper forms or schedules that are so detailed no one could ever follow them. I am talking about priority, priority, priority. Simple put, are you working the highest payback items first.

So, once you know were you are going and how to get there, the third step is simple - get up and do it.

9. Action - no matter what - if you do something, then something will happen. If you do nothing, then nothing will happen.
10. Persistence - do you refuse to give up? Do you refuse to lose? Do you keep on rolling even when it gets tough? Do you keep on rolling even when you "don't feel like it?"
11. Discipline - simply put - do you do what you said you would do, when you said you would do it. Or has all that gone out the window?
12. Practice - you know how I feel on this one. I don't care how long you been doing it. I don't care how good you think you are. I have been selling for 30 years. I still spend 30 minutes almost every work day reading and learning to get better. Practice does make perfect although I am not there yet!
13. If you got this far, you are in business. The final step, or the step that encompasses it all. Listening. How good are you at closing the mouth and opening both ears. The better you are at it, the greater next year will be.

Almost every company, organization or sport team utilize smart goal setting to achieve their targets and objectives.

Prior to every rugby season I will sit down with the other coaches and all the players, and set goals of what we'd like to achieve individually and collectively during our pre-season, through to mid-season and also obviously end of season.

Setting Goals Is A Must

Goal setting is vital to success. A streamlined approach to goals is more likely to guarantee achievement. It is in man's very nature to achieve. Setting a goal for yourself is one of the best ways to realize your strength and potential. This can be applied both personally and professionally.

In today's highly industrialized and modernized world, nearly every single entity you encounter has a set goal. Each of these individual or group thrives and operates in attaining one goal after the other. Growth is relative to a man's vision or desire of how far or high he can go.

The ultimate achievement in man's life remains to be the grasp of contentment. Often, it is the elusiveness of contentment, with however much or little you have, that fuels the need to get more, or achieve more. A lot of studied and evaluated structures that have been formed in the pursuit of attaining goals have been used.

S.M.A.R.T. Goals

One, that has been highlighted more than most is the use of smart goal setting. The letters to smart or S.M.A.R.T. stand for the five definitions that make up this strategy to achieve goals.

S - SPECIFIC

This means that if you make a goal, it should be one that's easily understood by you and others. It should be clear and zeroed in. It's quite easy to reply 'I plan to lose weight', when one is asked of a new year's resolution. Saying 'my goal is to lose 10 pounds by the end of the year, is more vivid. The feasibility of a goal starts with how specific the goal is. This paves the way for a clearer way toward the goal.

M - MEASURABLE

This connotes that a goal needs to be quantifiable. A goal that can be rated gives it visibility and monitoring of progress. If a goal can't be measured, it's most likely to be unrealizable. Saying' I want to improve as a runner', is vague and general, saying 'I'll try running ten more kilometres in my next run' is a lot more manageable as a goal. Having an actual mark to aim for, makes smart goal setting a lot better.

A - ATTAINABLE

This relates to having the facility to achieve a goal. This may include a certain skill set, knowledge, attitude, or even equipment that will help you reach your goal. Increasing muscle mass, or getting in a certain body type, will always employ the right gym equipment for the body part that needs work. A department goal, should also be aligned with the core values and vision of the company as a whole to be deemed attainable.

R - REALISTIC

Decide on a farfetched goal, and you've successfully set yourself up for failure. This is where realistic comes in as another important characteristic of a smart goal set. The achievement of a goal is also dependent on how actual, real and valid it is. To say that you'll quit on all the unhealthy stuff you've been eating now, when you've been on that habit for most of your life is too bold for reality. Saying that you'll start substituting snacks for fruits, each time you crave is more believable.

T - TIME-BOUND

Lastly, timely is the characteristic that puts the timeframe in a goal. Taking note of the start and the end date, by which the goal should be realized, enables you to check on how far or close you are to your goal.

Smart goal setting, is a very effective and reliable means to achieve more and reach your objectives in life, through taking one good step at a time. To succeed at anything in life you must know what you want and take continuous action toward achieving it. Setting goals is extremely powerful as it provides you with a map of where you want to go. Start realizing all your life's dreams and desires through effective and proven smart goal setting.

The Blueprint isn't magical, and it isn't strange. It's a straightforward look at the essential elements of an effective financial plan, and it prepares you to take steps to accomplish your financial life goals and fulfill your dreams.

In part two of the Blueprint, you take a fearless financial inventory. Be rigorously honest and make an accurate assessment. When I work with clients, I ask them to bring every piece of information that has to do with their money: bank statements, IRAs, 401k's, other investments, mortgage information, auto loans, credit card balances and other debts, and all sources of income and a copy of the budget if they have one.

One client asked me if he should include some family debts. That's a good question, and one that's not easily answered. Many people fail to list money they've borrowed from family members as debts they owe. Somehow, they seem to think it doesn't really count-and it doesn't if they don't intend to repay it, except in their consciences.

John and Krista are in their early 30s with two small children. Both of them worked until their first child was born. Krista put her career on hold to be at home, but their income, of course, was cut in half. When they came to see me, they realized they needed to put together an effective financial plan so they could provide for their family. First, they articulated what matters most. They told me that they have two passions: their family and their volunteer work at a food pantry.

The next step for John and Krista was to take a fearless financial inventory. As you can imagine, in order for their plan to be effective, they had to get everything out on the table before we could attempt to hammer out meaningful financial goals. Suddenly, they realized they had to make some decisions-some hard decisions-about what's most important to them. They quickly understood that they couldn't do everything they'd ever wanted to do but they would be able to meet their most important goals.

As we finished the financial planning process, I asked the same question I always ask: When you achieve your most important financial life goals, what will that feel like?

Are you one who finds it easy to dream, but hard to get the dream out of your mind and into reality? If the answer is yes then it is time for you to stop simply being a dreamer, and start being someone who achieves their dream.

You were created to achieve your dreams, and you deserve to reach them. Refuse to continue to let your dreams just sit inside of your mind day after day, month after month, and year after year. It is your moment to begin to create the life you deserve.

Below are three tips to assist you with getting your dreams out of your mind and into reality.

1. Release the fear of not succeeding

Don't even let the fear of not succeeding take over you. This is something that can hold you back quicker than anything. So many people never even take the first step because of the fear of not succeeding. Instead of letting fear hold you back, let faith move you forward. It is not fair to you if you allow fear to hold your dreams hostage.

2: Do it one small step at a time

Just take one small step at a time toward achieving your dreams. It is easy to look at the big picture and feel intimidated, but when you take one small step at a time, this can make you feel more at ease. It can also help you to feel successful as you are conquering the small steps.

The thing to remember is that even the small steps will lead you toward reaching your dreams. Many people think that the small steps don't matter. But they do matter, and they matter in a big way. When you take one small step today, that is one less step that you will have to take tomorrow.

3. Believe that you can succeed

It is important for you to believe that you can do what you have set out to do. If you don't believe that you can achieve your dreams, then you will not likely put forth the effort that is needed for you to reach success. You have to develop a mindset for success. And regardless of what happens on the journey, never believe for a moment that you won't succeed.

Those three tips are not the only tips that can assist you with getting your dreams out of your mind, and into reality. But they are three tips that can inspire and empower you to begin to think differently, and take action.

You can begin right now by creating a list of the things you will do, that will assist you with achieving your dreams. Stick to your list and don't quit. Focus on what you want to achieve, and then do it. Before you know it you will see results.

Don't Allow Others To Hold You Back

We all live a lifelong journey to become who we were truly destined to be. No one is the same person they were 10 years ago.

Even if the changes are slight and barely noticeable, life and living impresses upon us to make our evolution constant. Then there are times when the changes are dramatic, and by doing so, you will grow apart from people you once knew, and they may resent your new reality.

Remember, you've only one life to lead. It's important for you to embrace the opportunity to live it just the way you want. Most people are afraid of change. They want you to stay exactly as they've always known you.

It's easier for them to accept you, they way they've learned to understand you, then to embrace the new life you've come to love. If those around you aren't the positive influence and support you need, perhaps it's time for new friends.

I know what I'm saying may be harsh to some. The thought of not having some people in your life may seem unrealistic and cruel.

However there is nothing more cruel that people who pretend to care about your best interest, imposing themselves on you that deny your progress and happiness, merely to satisfy their own insecurities. In embracing the new you, you will attract other like minded people to you. People who are positive, nurturing, and supportive.

It is healthy to change and progress through life. Some people in our lives are only meant to be a part of it for certain times. Then, we move on, move away, and lessons learned become the valuable wisdom we use in the future.

Don't let other's emotional pleas and distress hold you back from the good things that are happening to you. Don't let them hold you back from the things you truly want in life. If they are your true friends, and they were meant to share in your experience, they will support you, and be there for you along the way.

Love who you are, and love who you're becoming. Change is our own personal destiny. Surrounding yourself with positive reinforcement is the key to ensuring your life progresses in a healthy manner. Some will never accept the new you. Some may never see you as anything you once were. You don't need their negative comments, and influence. Surround yourself with positive people who believe in you, and the changes you're making, and wonderful new opportunities will flow to you.

The essential aspect of keeping focused is to have a goal and keep it in sight at all times. In fact, never let go of the goal until it is well and truly accomplished. It could be a goal which encompasses a long term strategy but the main point is to work hard on it and never give up!

Focus and goals go hand in hand. Both work in unison with each other. Goals go a long way to creating focus that creates accomplishment.

Many successful people look to goals for focus however if you take some time to research people in working environments you will find that many cannot even say what their own specific goals are or that of their organisation. Also, many cannot say how their personal goals align with those of their company's!

A reason for this is that people state that they do not have time to work on their goals or indeed write them down in the first place. So many people in organisations believe that they have no control over the economy which will have a direct bearing on whether they will be able to hold down their jobs.

So the ideology of many is "why should I care about goals as I have no control over my future, there are just too many variables which I have no control over?"

Jim Rohn, the celebrated philosopher once stated that people "spend more time on planning their next vacation than they do on their own lives." The logic behind this could be that planning a holiday is a pleasant escapism for many and easy to focus on. It is short-term.

To achieve success and move forward with your life, it is highly important to have and work on your personally defined goals. By doing so we have something tangible to focus our attention on every day. Personal goals that are aligned with your company's goals create powerful drive, enthusiasm, momentum and dedication.

If there are no organisation goals in place then by having personal goals will prove even more important. Personal goals will keep you on track and offer steadfast direction. If you have no goals you will be aimlessly wasting each and every day and wondering what you have done with your life.

So keep focused on your goals and just watch how your life will soar to new heights!

Your Purpose in Life and How It Affects Your Future

When you meet a professional and ask them "Why did you become a ______?", their answer can tell you a lot about their passion.

Passionate teachers sometimes say it's because they love to teach, doctors commonly say it's because they want to help people and someone who works in finances has a thing for money, all these answers will tell you about some passion they have for their jobs. This is what makes them GOOD at their jobs.

Passion goes along hand in hand with a person's purpose in life because if not passion, what is going to drive you to be the best at your job? You can say you "need" to work to support your family, but that sort f drive doesn't necessarily make you happy, I don't want to say it's a burden but I'm pretty sure that person has another passion that they just couldn't follow because of circumstances.

So how is your Purpose in Life going to affect your future? It will in many ways, take a lady for example who has gone into the business of skin care.

Char always had skin problems growing up; sure we all go through bad skin phases in our teens but everyone doesn't know what it is like to have to deal with acne. Acne is terrifying no matter what age you are, but it's especially dreadful to have it going through high school. Anyone can say it's just the outside of a person and it doesn't determine who you are, but it does affect you.

Imagine being that girl or boy who gets looked at because of these pimples on your face and not because of the color of your eyes. People are shocked at the number of pimples on your face rather than the cute freckles. You don't enjoy chocolates because no matter how good they taste you think they will make your acne worse.

Every time you meet someone the first thing they notice is your acne, no matter how sexy you are, how good your grades are, even if you're wearing a new dress or you just got your hair colored, it's the acne that's always seen first. This is something you can never quite understand unless you've been there.

Then you become an adult, no more teasing in school, no more proms that you don't go to, no more getting stared at, or not that much at least, but the acne is still there! So now you're looking for a solution, anything to get rid of this pain in your butt!

So you try what is supposed to be the best acne solution there is, then your world goes crashing down. What you thought was bad has become worse, the skin treatment did not only fail to work, but it actually made your acne worse. This is when Char just became completely fed up. It's time for her to find a real solution.

Char did research and found out everything there is to know about acne. She came across a doctor who had been working with Tretinoin and she began to work with this doctor. With everything she had learned she started using products and stuck to a daily regimen and what do you know, her acne which had once been an uncontrollable devastation on her face had now become something she could manage. This was not just a clear up of her skin to her, this was something life changing.

Knowing the impact it had on her, she set out to help people who were suffering like she did. She enrolled in an Esthetics training program and soon enough came up with her own custom formulated skin care line. She has a waiting list of new clients that can last for months! Her clients are loyal customers and her life is complete. This all because she found what she was passionate about and made it her life.

It doesn't matter what your life struggles may have been or what brought you down even what keeps you up, anything passion can be made into a career. Look at people who are mentors or life and business coaches, many if not most of them have stories that brought them to what they do. People who were so deep in debt that they could hardly see any light become financial coaches and help people get out of debt.

People who have been homeless and who have lived on the streets help people in financial trouble get up on their feet and make a change in their lives. People who have failed in business turn out helping people make their failing businesses work!

There are even those who have been abused, raped, assaulted and who have been in accidents that make their stories ones that people can relate to, even celebrities. They tell their stories and start awareness programs so people don't have to hide or be ashamed anymore because being a victim is not something you should be blamed for or feel wrong about, it's something you should be helped for.

So whatever your passion is, you can make it your purpose in life. If you don't know where to start, that's okay. You just need to follow these steps:

1. Grab your notebook, a journal or even your laptop and write down some struggles you've had in your life. They can experiences in school, at home, with family or friends, anything that was a struggle in your life no matter how long ago or how small it may seem, as long as you remember what and why.

2. After you've listed down your struggles, go over them and look for the theme. Do they seem to be connected somehow? Is there something similar about why those struggles took place? Is there an underlying reason, a mindset or even a habit connection the list?

3. Think about how you resolved these issues. What did you do, how did your react, how were they solved?

4. Now write down what you learned from these struggles and what your learned from the solutions. This is going to tell you about skills you have I you that you may not have thought of before.

5. Now think about someone else going through what you went through, are the things you learned something that could benefit someone else? Are these insights you can share that will help people? If someone had told you what you had to learn the hard way when you were going through those problems would it have helped you?

6. Now look at the whole picture, watch it as if it were a movie and create an ending. Is this passion something you can make a life out of? This is what I hope has become your purpose in life.

Life is not simple, but it can be simpler. You can make things better and make life more of what you want it to be, you just need to move in the right direction and maybe, just maybe, you can help move someone else's life in the right direction too.

Can You Accept Change in Your Life?

Change is part of nature; it occurs every second of the day, within your body and in the world that you live in.

Change is a necessary part of life, but, as people, we tend to fight it because we fear what these changes might bring. When you think back on your life, the most difficult times were usually those that taught you lessons you might never have learned, and as fire molds steel, you usually come out stronger and molded with a purpose you might not have had before.

Stop Fighting the Inevitable

When we fight change, we fight our inherent nature and this is when we become stagnant, unhappy and without a purpose. Accepting change might not always prevent the difficult times that are presented to us through these changes, but it will make it easier for you to accept these challenges and learn from them.

Fighting change is much like fighting a storm; while you waste all of your energy trying to prevent the inevitable, the storm will simply continue on its course, uninhibited by your frugal attempts. You might be able to prevent change for a few moments, weeks or even years, but one day it will arrive on your doorstep, and the only way to prevent it from tearing the house down is to greet it as you would a long lost friend and let it in.

Can you Accept Change in your Life: Welcoming Small Changes

Can you accept change in your life? Some of us are more used to change than others; travelers flit through cities, barely remembering where they last lay their heads, while there are some that refuse to leave the home they purchased twenty years before, even if it is crumbling beneath their feet.

Change is something that you can learn, however, if you start accepting it in small pieces. Try something new every day, no matter how small or big the task, and you will soon find that change is opportunity in disguise. Even the challenges that it brings are rough stones that we can use to fine tune our abilities, and ourselves, so that we can face life with braver hearts, ready to rise above the tides that roll our way.

Life is an Adventure and Change is our Steed

As children, we tend to be more open to change. We tend to be more excited about visiting new places, trying new foods and activities, and meeting new people. This zest for life need not be lost along the way.

Change is not a burden that you need to carry to call yourself human; it is the steed that carries us on our adventure through life; one that we should welcome with open arms whenever it rears its head. The next time you are asked, "can you accept change in your life?" the answer you should give should be an excited and determined "yes!"

Are You Present in the Here and Now

"The past is history, the future is a mystery, but today is a gift. That's why they call it the present."

While I don't actually know who to attribute this quote to, I can't deny that I like it. I like it a lot.

Sure, it sounds a little Hallmark-ish, a little sappy, but there's truth in it. I mean there is nothing that can be done about the past - it's gone. And the future may or may not unfold as you imagine. But the here and now, the present - this is a powerful place to hang out.

Unfortunately, the world in which you find yourself is a very, very busy one. There are numerous expectations to be met and therefore plans must be made in order to ensure that nothing falls through the cracks. So the question that I often find myself holding is this: how do you stay fully present in this moment, even while you engage in whatever preparations are required for the future, no matter how distant?

I find this question particularly relevant at this time of year. It's rather ironic, because in so many traditions the coming weeks are a time of "being patient", of waiting, of celebrating the here and now.

But in North America, recent holidays such as thanksgiving (in Canada), Halloween and Remembrance Day are barely over and already Christmas plans are well underway. I'm guilty of jumping on that bandwagon, I admit it. While I haven't actually started Christmas shopping, I have contemplated lists, asked people for gift suggestions, scheduled some holiday get-togethers - and there's still 6 weeks to go!

Having played with this question for a long time - many years, in fact - my sense is that the key to being fully present while planning for the future lies in creating space for both, and, allowing the present to be your primary focus.

There's something about taking the time and doing what you need to do to anchor yourself completely in this moment, so that when you make your plans for the future, you're still here. It's about holding your focus in the now, knowing that you'll be able to do the same in the future, when the future becomes the present (and it will; just give it time).

I know it seems somewhat paradoxical. I mean how do you focus on this moment, when you're making plans for the holiday party that's happening in two weeks? Well, here are just a few strategies to help keep you anchored:

* Before starting a task, close your eyes and go inward. Focus on how your body feels right now.
* Root yourself; feel your feet firmly planted on the ground beneath you, and imagine a string travelling through your core, from the tip of your head, through the middle of your body, anchoring you to the present time and space.
* Quickly (but consciously and deliberately) inventory 5-10 things for which you are grateful right now, in this moment.
* Focus on your breath which, after all, is totally happening right now. Nothing brings you to the present moment quicker than this. Maintain your focus for 5 full breaths, filling your lungs completely, and exhaling fully.

Once you've engaged in any or all of these strategies, you'll be able to feel yourself completely engaged in the present moment. You're here, and nowhere else. And with this solid anchor, you can venture forth and make your plans, knowing that your anchor will do what it's supposed to do, which is keep you in this space.

Bottom-line: right here, right now is where you're meant to be. Yes, life is moving along at a somewhat alarming speed. There is much to be done. And, doing whatever needs to be done while keeping yourself fully grounded in the present experience will serve you far better than fast-forwarding through your life. Stay focused, stay grounded, stay present. Stay in the here and now.

The Best Ways to Break a Bad Habit

There are many ways to break bad habits, all of which require brute force and iron will power, and all of which eventually end in relapse as the "broken" habit reassembles itself.

So rather than discussing the breaking of bad habits, we're going to look at some ways to release negative behavior patterns and create positive patterns in their place. Let's begin with the most important behavior of all.

Change The Way You Speak to Yourself

Our choice of words says a lot about out internal state at any given moment. It also reinforces that state by communicating to ourselves and others our true intentions. When someone tells me they want to "break" a bad habit, that tells me that they see the habit as a force outside of themselves that they must fight and destroy. Their whole mindset is one of a confrontation that must necessarily have a winner and a loser.

A habit is nothing more than a pattern of behavior that we have allowed to gain momentum over time. Fighting against that would be like trying to stop a boulder rolling down a hill by standing in front of it. Who's going to be the loser in that situation?

Instead of trying to break the habit, why not decide to release the pattern of behaviors that no longer serves you?

Instead of ever saying that you can't do something, why not ask yourself "What can I do to get where I want to be?"

Whenever you find yourself saying that you should do something, which is really just a way of telling yourself that you never really plan on doing it, why not say to yourself, "After I do this my life will be so much better because...", and then list all the ways in which your life will improve. Really get involved in the process and visualize the desirable outcomes as clearly as possible.

This one simple change will immediately cure any tendency towards procrastination since you are now communicating all the benefits of the new behavior you want to acquire to your subconscious mind. After a lifetime of "should" and "could" and "can't," your subconscious will probably feel like it has just discovered an oasis after a long trek through a barren desert.

Choose your words and visualizations with purpose and deep feeling, and your subconscious will be motivated to lend you any resources and insights you need to follow through on any goal you set for yourself.

5 Ways to Take Personal Responsibility

I believe that it is possible to create better results for ourselves by making better choices. I'm not saying that bad things won't ever happen, but we are responsible for the choices we make everyday in our lives.

I have worked with clients who blame the economy, blame their spouse, and blame their competitors for not having more business and making more money. Or the entrepreneur, who complains about working all the time and not having any personal time. These are all choices that we freely make and we need to take personal responsibility for the outcomes we create.

1 - Acknowledge that you are solely responsible for the choices in your life: The job you're in, where you live, your spouse or partner, the house you live in, the car you drive, the friends you keep. These are things that we chose, and if you are unhappy with some (or all) of these things, it's time to make a different choice. Small incremental changes can create really big results!

2 - Accept that you are responsible for every action and non-action: You create your life with every action and every inaction you take. So often I will listen to one of my clients talk about how they "could've done this", or "could've taken advantage of that". It's true. There are opportunities that present themselves to us everyday, but we don't see them as an opportunity. We see it as "too much work", "too hard to do", "not what I wanted" and we take no action on it.

3 - Accept that you cannot blame others for your choices: At one time or other, we've all blamed our siblings, our parents, our spouse or partner or friend for some injustice in our life, but you cannot blame others for your choices. No one else is responsible. If you want things to be different in your life-then it's your responsibility to make the change!

4 - Have positive expectations - even in the face of adversity: This is easier said than done, I know. But it is possible to have positive expectations and to take positive action every day in some way, to change the things that you are unhappy or dissatisfied with in your work or life. A person with a negative or cynical attitude will never accomplish much. That's because when an opportunity arises, the negative mind will find a reason (or 100 reasons) not to act upon it.

5 - Accept that you choose the outcome of life: By taking personal responsibility we start to move from our present situation into a better life. We are in total control of the thoughts we have and the decisions and choices we make.
