Having a plan and setting goals. "Do I need to, or not?" This is a question many ask. What is the importance of having a plan and setting goals? What is the point? Do I have to? The answer is really quite simple.
Think of it this way. When you go shopping at the grocery store, the first thing you do is get a buggy or basket and off you go "to just get a few things". Well, that's a plan, a mental plan, but a plan none the less. If you have the determination and focus to follow that mental plan and stick to it without any distractions getting in the way, great.
But that is a very difficult thing to master and control. You would be far better off by being practical and detailed. Without a goal, as in this example, you're setting yourself up for failure and disappointment.
So you're off to grocery shopping, you travel aimlessly up and down the aisles selecting the necessities for your pantry and fridge. One of these and two of those, make it three and then "Oh, what a great sale, gotta get at least 6!" Coupons? Yes, you have lots of those but too bad you left them all at home! Could have used them. "Oh well" you say to yourself, "I'll get this now anyway and use my coupons next trip".
Can you see where this is going? The outcome is inevitable. Shock at the checkout! Your "few items" totalled more than you have in your wallet! You head home shaking your head in disgust at the high cost of groceries items. You arrive home and while putting the items away, you discover all the things that you forgot to get, even though they were in your mental plan in the first place!
If you had a plan and set goals to make your shopping excursion successful and productive, a list would have been made of all the things you really needed. You would have streamlined that list to fit into the boundaries of your budget and you would have had a clear and concise blueprint to follow and you would have seen a happy ending to your shopping experience and a successful outcome to your mission.
When you apply the principles of this example to other areas of your life, you can see why it is so necessary. Yes, it is important to set goals and to have a plan. It is necessary to do this to accomplish what you set out to do in the master plan. Visualize the end result that you desire.
Set benchmarks along the way, they can be viewed as mini-goals if you like. Make them a part of your plan. Benchmarks are great when reviewing where you've been and where you're going. These give you the opportunity to make any changes necessary to streamline the journey. This exercise will keep you focused on your end result without wasting time, spending too much of your money and allows you the luxury to make any adjustments to the plan.
Make a plan, set your goals and review to improve. In doing this, you will reach your destination with a successful outcome.
